Tasmania in November 2018: wet in the east, warm nights

November was wet for much of Tasmania, especially in the east. Overnight temperatures were well above average, whilst days were mostly a little above average.

Wet in the east

  • A slow-moving cloud band with embedded thunderstorms brought intense rain to parts of the west on the 20th, giving a November record 63.4 mm of rain to Strahan in the 24 hours to 9 am on 21 November, with most of that falling in the 3 hours between 10 pm on the 20th and 1 am on the 21st
  • Despite the localised intense rain, November rainfall totals were close to average for most of the western half of Tasmania
  • A low pressure system to the east of Tasmania from the 22nd to the 25th brought moderate falls across the State, with locally heavy falls on the central East Coast
  • November rainfall was above average in the east and northeast, with some areas well above average
  • Tasmania's total November rainfall was about 9% above average

Warm nights

  • Minimum temperatures were well above average across Tasmania, although no records were broken
  • Tasmania's mean minimum temperature for November was the eighth-warmest at 0.90 °C above average
  • Maximum temperatures were mixed, with some sites reporting below-average mean maximum temperatures but most areas coming in a little above average
  • The warmest weather occurred around the middle of the month, with several sites reaching into the 30s on the 13th
  • The State's mean maximum temperature was 0.35 °C above average
  • Tasmania's overall mean temperature for November was 0.63 °C above average, cooler than the record-breaking November 2017 but much warmer than November 2016

A mild November for Hobart

  • Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 61.6 mm, which is 114% of the long-term average of 54.2 mm
  • Along with much of the southeast, Hobart registered rain on every day from the 21st to the 28th
  • The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 19.5 °C, which is 0.8 °C above the long-term average of 18.7 °C
  • Hobart's warmest day was 31.0 °C on the 13th (the warmest day since February), whilst it coolest day was on the 15th when the temperature reached 13.2 °C
  • The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 10.6 °C, which is 1.3 °C above the long-term average of 9.3 °C. The coldest morning was 5.3 °C on the 3rd, and the warmest morning was on the 21st when the minimum temperature was 15.5 °C

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 3 December 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
