Monday, 3 September 2007 - Seasonal Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC27R0
It was another relatively dry winter in Tasmania, despite some flooding rain during August. Although there were some warm days and nights, temperatures were mostly below the winter averages overall.
More detailed summaries have been prepared for each individual month of winter: June, July and August. A summary of the record dry winter 2006 was issued as a media release.
Jump to: Extremes Records Summaries Notes the top
Dry in most areas: Despite some flooding rain in August, rainfall was below the winter average in most areas. Both June and July were generally drier than average, and record dry in some spots. Most of the state, and especially the northwestern half, was drier than average for winter. Although rain was close to normal in the south and on the East Coast, only in the far southeast — on the Tasman Peninsula and south Bruny Island — was it a wetter-than-average winter.
Some mild days, but many more cold ones: Maximum (daytime) temperatures were generally below average for winter, typically by about 0.2 to 0.5°C, although they were a fraction above the winter average on the Bass Strait islands and patches of the northeast and northwest coasts. It was mostly cold from the start of June until the end of July, and for much of August. The last few days of winter did see some temperatures in the low 20s in the south and east.
Many frosty nights, but some mild ones: Along with the cold days, there were also plenty of cold nights, especially in June and again in mid-August. Eddystone Point registered its lowest winter temperature on record. However, there were also several relatively mild nights through July and August, and Geeveston had its warmest-ever winter night. Taken across winter, minimum (overnight) temperatures were mostly below average by about half a degree. The main exception was the northern East Coast, which escaped the coldest of the nights and ended up about half a degree above average. The average minimum at Wynyard was a record low for winter.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 3 September 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Normals are long-term means based
on observations
from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to
site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they
cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of "normal" rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall
this time compares
with the climate record for the site,
based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1,
low in decile 2 or 3,
normal in decile 4 to 7, high in
decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much
rain has fallen this time as a
percentage
of the long-term mean.
