Queensland in September 2017: Little rain and very warm days
During the last week record-breaking heat spread from southwestern districts throughout much of the State away from northeastern districts and the Gulf of Carpentaria coastline. The area-averaged minimum temperature for Queensland was above average after inland and southern parts observed cool overnight temperatures during the first couple of weeks. Most of the State observed little to no rainfall and this month was the 10th lowest September on record.
Outside of very isolated falls there was little to no rain for most of the State
- Little to no rainfall was recorded over most of Queensland, and many sites recorded their lowest total September rainfall for several decades
- It was the tenth-driest September for Queensland as a whole, and the driest since 2003
- Over the 18th and 19th upper-level and surface troughs combined and very isolated moderate falls were recorded in the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands giving some sites their highest total September rainfall for at least 20 years
- On 23rd thunderstorm activity in the Southeast Coast delivered light rain of generally less than 10 mm to the Greater Brisbane area
Cool nights, warm days, then record-breaking heat
- Warm northerly airflow ahead of approaching troughs resulted in record-breaking heat over a large part of the country including New South Wales
- Several sites in the State's southern, western and central districts including sites in the Greater Brisbane area experienced their highest September temperature on record on one or more days between the 27th and 30th
- Birdsville reached a maximum of 42.8 °C on the 27th, setting a new record for Queensland's highest September temperature surpassing the previous record set in 2003 by 0.4 °C
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Queensland was 2.85 °C above average for September, the second-warmest on record
- Numerous sites throughout the State recorded their highest September mean daily maximum temperature on record
- After cool nights in the southern Queensland, minimum temperatures warmed from mid-month and during the heat of the last week, a number of sites in southern and western regions observed their warmest September night on record
- The mean daily minimum temperature for Queensland was 0.69 °C above average for September
Strong winds, little rain and warm temperatures led to elevated fire danger
- Strong winds combined with warmer than average temperatures and little rain resulting in elevated fire danger; numerous bushfires occurred in the southern, northern and central coast districts
- On the 23rd a lightning strike set bushland alight on the Sunshine Coast

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 October 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
