New South Wales in July 2015: Coolest July since 1997

New South Wales recorded generally cool days during July, with the statewide mean temperature the coolest since 1997. Two low pressure systems caused snow across the tablelands and into central NSW, the most significant snow event since at least October 2012.

  • Coolest July since 1997
  • Two cold snaps produce snow throughout the tablelands
  • Close to average rainfall

The NSW statewide average rainfall was 11% below average during July 2015. Rainfall was above average in central NSW, parts of which recorded their wettest July since 1993, while Lord Howe Island recorded its wettest July since 1979. In comparison, rainfall was below average in parts of the far west and central coast, with parts of the Hunter recording the driest July since 1995.

A low pressure system and cold front caused precipitation across much of central NSW between the 10th and 12th, with snowfalls greater than 5 cm reported across much of the tablelands. An east coast low caused additional rain and snow over the 15th and 16th, with totals reaching 110.6 mm at Jervis Bay for the 24 hours to 9am on the 17th, while Goulburn recorded its equal-wettest July day on record. Snow fell in higher quantities and to lower elevations in the second event, with snow settling on the ground at Goulburn and Orange, and depths of 15-20 cm reported in Oberon and Blackheath.

The mean temperature for NSW during July was 0.2 °C below average, making it the coldest July since 1997. Daytime temperatures were 0.5 °C below average and the coolest since 1998, with most areas of the state recording well below average daytime temperatures and parts of central NSW recording their coolest July days in over 20 years. In comparison, the statewide mean minimum temperature was 0.1 °C above average, with average to cool nights across the south and west but warmer than average nights in parts of the northeast. Despite a prolonged period of cool temperatures between the 12th and 17th, including the coolest day for NSW statewide-average temperatures since June 2007, no records were broken at stations with more than 30 years of data.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 3 August 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
