New South Wales in February 2017: Another hot, dry month

February was a hot, dry end to the summer, with very warm temperatures in the first half of the month culminating in record-breaking heat over the 10th and 11th. Mean temperatures were the fifth-warmest on record for the State and daytime temperatures were the highest since February 1926, while rainfall was less than half the historical average.

Hot weather continues

  • February was the third-warmest on record for NSW average maximum temperatures, 3.0 °C above average and the warmest since 1926
  • Maximum temperatures were above average across most of the State and the warmest on record at more than 40 stations
  • The statewide average minimum temperature was 1.3 °C above average, with several stations recording their highest February mean daily minimum temperature on record
  • The statewide average mean temperature was the fifth-warmest on record and the warmest since 2004, with most of the northeast half of the State recording mean temperatures in the warmest 10% of years
  • Temperatures were well above average during the first half of the month and peaked on the 11th, with large numbers of stations recording their warmest February day on record between the 10th and 12th, as well as record-high statewide average temperatures on both the 10th (42.40 °C) and 11th (44.00 °C)
  • Several stations also broke records for daily minimum temperatures in the first half of the month, with 34.2 °C at White Cliffs on the 11th the highest overnight minimum ever recorded anywhere in NSW
  • Temperatures were closer to normal during the second half of the month, with some stations recording their coldest February night on record on the 20th or 21st
  • For more information on heat records broken during February and summer, see Special Climate Statement 61: Exceptional heat in southeast Australia in early 2017

A dry end to summer

  • Rainfall was below average across most of NSW during February, with above-average totals isolated to parts of the Sydney and Illawarra regions
  • The statewide average rainfall was 60% below average, with some stations recording their driest February on record
  • The heaviest falls were recorded in coastal areas associated with onshore flow on the 8th and over the 26th and 27th
  • Severe thunderstorms produced locally heavy rain in the northeast of the state between the 18th and 20th

Thunderstorms and fires

  • Severe thunderstorms in southeast NSW on the 11th and 12th produced wind gusts of up to 107 km/h at Yanco, with wind damage reported in Wagga Wagga
  • Severe thunderstorms affected much of northern and eastern NSW between the 17th and 19th, producing heavy rain, strong winds, and large hail. Wind gusts reached 109 km/h at Cessnock on the 17th, while 4 cm and larger hail caused car and roof damage across much of northern and northwest Sydney as well as in Bowral on the 18th, including reports of 8-9 cm hail in Annangrove
  • Hot, dry and windy conditions contributed to the development of several severe fires, particularly on the 12th, with 35 homes destroyed in the Sir Ivan Fire in the Warrumbungle region, 11 homes destroyed by a grass fire at Carwoola, near Queanbeyan, and several additional homes destroyed in bushfires in Pappinbarra, Dondingalong and Boggabri

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 March 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
