NSW in April 2013: A return to dry weather for inland NSW

• Little to no rainfall in most of NSW west of the divide; driest April since 2005

Rainfall - Little rain in inland NSW, heavy rain on the south coast

NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 15.0 mm during April, well below the historical average of 46.7 mm and the driest April since 2005. Much of inland NSW recorded no rainfall at all during the month, with close to 60% of the state recording less than 5 mm and an average rainfall of 9.0 mm in the Murray-Darling Basin (historical average 38.1 mm).

Rainfall was closer to normal east of the Great Dividing Range, with above average totals on parts of the coastal strip. Coastal showers were common during the first half of the month, with Coffs Harbour recording rain on 13 of the first 14 days of April. Heavier falls were recorded on the south coast on the 1st, reaching 122 mm at Jervis Bay, with persistent coastal rain during a period of easterly flow between the 3rd and 5th and three-day totals as high as 137.4 mm at Sydney Botanic Gardens.

A coastal low pressure system on the 20th also produced rainfall along the southern half of the coast, with widespread falls greater than 25 mm recorded to 9am on the 20th and 21st. Falls were heaviest in the Shoalhaven region, with daily totals reaching 160.9 mm at Narooma on the 20th, the wettest April day on record, and 48-hour totals to 9am on the 21st of 226.2 mm at Ulladulla.

Temperature - Warm days and cool nights

NSW recorded a statewide average maximum temperature of 25.3 °C during April, 1.2 °C above the historical average and the warmest April since 2007. The warm conditions were associated with generally dry, clear weather during the month, with most of inland NSW more than 1 °C above average but closer to normal temperature along the coast.

A persistent warm spell affected southwest NSW between the 7th and 14th, with eight consecutive days above 30 °C at Broken Hill, the latest such spell on record (previous record 28 March - 6 April 1962). Temperatures were also unseasonably warm at the end of the month, reaching 32.2 °C at Menindee, one of the latest days on record so warm.

In contrast, minimum temperatures were generally cooler than normal during April, with a statewide average of 10.6 °C, 0.5 °C below the historical average. Nights were coolest in northern inland NSW, with milder nights on the southern border. The mean temperature for April was consequently 17.9 °C, 0.3 °C above the historical average.

A cool spell impacted the state on the 19th and 20th, with maximum temperatures dropping to -0.3 °C at Thredbo. Snow was reported at Thredbo Village for the first time in 2013, with 3 cm of snow reported at Perisher. The cool temperatures were associated with a coastal low pressure system, which produced heavy rain and damaging surf along the south coast and wind gusts of up to 106 km/h at Montague Island.
