New South Wales in January 2017: Hot and dry

January was very warm across NSW, with many stations in the north and east breaking records for average daytime, overnight or mean temperatures. There were several warm periods during the month, with daily minimum temperature records broken on both the 14th and 18th and several stations breaking records for total numbers of hot days or warm nights. Rainfall was average to below average, and very dry in parts of the southeast, with thunderstorms causing locally heavy rain and strong winds during the month.

A hot start to the year

  • NSW recorded its third-warmest January on record for mean temperatures during 2017, with the statewide average temperature 3.34 °C above the historical average
  • Both maximum and minimum temperatures were at least 3 °C above average and the fourth-warmest on record for the State
  • Both daytime and overnight temperatures were well above average across most of the State, with record-warm January mean maximum or minimum temperatures in parts of the east and north

Persistent heat in the north and east

  • NSW experienced several back-to-back severe heatwaves during January, with many stations experiencing their warmest January night on record on the 14th or 18th, and some stations (including Montague Island and Murrurrundi) exceeded their previous record twice during the month
  • While few daily temperature records were set, many stations in the north and east broke records for the number of hot days or warm nights
  • Many stations set records for the persistence of warm conditions, with extreme heat extending from December and continuing into February
  • Temperatures reached 35 °C at Moree for 36 consecutive days between 27 December and 31 January, more than double record spell of 17 hot days set at the previous Moree site between 28 December 1981 and 13 January 1982
  • The warm conditions are partially related to the persistence of dry weather and warm northerly winds in eastern NSW over recent months, an absence of cooler outbreaks associated with southerly winds or heavy rainfall, and persistently warm sea surface temperatures in the Tasman Sea
  • NSW summer temperatures have increased by almost 1 °C since 1910, with large increases in the frequency of high temperature extremes and the intensity and duration of heatwaves observed since the late 1990s

A dry month

  • Rainfall was 41.6% below average across NSW during January
  • Rainfall was well below average in parts of the southeast, and the driest January for at least 20 years at some stations
  • Conditions have been persistently dry on the eastern seaboard of NSW since October 2016, with parts of eastern and northern NSW recording less than half the average rainfall for this time of year
  • In contrast, rain in inland NSW has been close to normal in recent months, following record high rainfall between May and September 2016
  • Heavy rain was reported in parts of the northeast during thunderstorms, including 167 mm at Uki on the 3rd

Thunderstorms and winds

  • Thunderstorms produced strong winds and heavy rain during the month, including wind gusts of 130 km/h at Mudgee on the 18th and 146 km/h at Wilcannia on the 23rd, with locally strong winds and heavy rain causing damage near Canberra on the 13th, Gunnedah on the 20th, and Cobar on the 23rd

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 February 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
