Tuesday, 1 August 2017 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in July 2017: Cold nights, dry in the east
Cold weather was common in Tasmania during July, with several especially cold overnight temperatures. Rainfall totals were close to average for much of the State, but it was another month of below-average rain in the east and rainfall was above average on King Island.
Rainfall below average in the east
- Rainfall was once again below average in the east of Tasmania, and especially near the East Coast: Bicheno reported just 7.8 mm for the month (its driest July since 1997), after having only 0.5 mm in June
- Totals on King Island were very much above average: King Island Airport had seven days with more than 10 mm, about double the July average for such wet days
- Rainfall was close to average over most of the rest of Tasmania; the State total rainfall was 12% below average
- There were a number of rainfall events during the month, most notably when low pressure systems were near the State around the 4th and 18th and when cold fronts crossed on the 14th and 23rd.
- It was wetter than the very dry June
Cold nights and cool days
- For most of Tasmania July was one or two degrees cooler than June
- Very low overnight temperatures and localised frosts were common during the month; several inland locations experienced long runs of nights below freezing and Liawenee dipped to −10.4 °C on the 3rd
- Lake St Clair and Ross – sites with relatively short record – had their lowest temperature on record
- Tasmania's mean minimum temperature for July was 0.59 °C below average, making it the coldest since 2008
- A few sites had their lowest July mean daily minimum temperature on record and several others (including Hobart and Launceston) had their lowest mean minimum temperature for several decades
- Days were also generally cooler than the July average, especially in the south, although the 25th and 29th brought temperatures in the mid to high teens to several locations
- Tasmania's mean maximum temperature for July was 0.11 °C below average
- Bushy Park and Maydena had their lowest July mean daily maximum temperature for several decades
- A few sites had their lowest July mean temperature on record, or the lowest in more than 20 years
- Tasmania's mean temperature for July was 0.34 °C below average, cooler than July last year but warmer than July 2015
Cold nights and some rain for Hobart
- Hobart's mean minimum temperature of 3.5 °C was 1.1 °C below the long-term average, the coolest month since June 2007 and the coolest July since 1982
- There were seven mornings when the temperature in Hobart dropped below 2 °C, above the long-term July average of about five mornings
- Hobart's mean maximum temperature of 12.2 °C was 0.5 °C above the long-term average, a degree cooler than July last year
- There were only three days where the temperature didn't reach 10 °C in Hobart, compared to the long-term July average of about seven such cold days
- A total of 37.2 mm of rain fell in Hobart, below the long-term average of 52.4 mm but still the wettest month since January and well above the June total of just 6.6 mm

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 August 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
From 2017, information about Macquarie Island can be found in the climate summary for the Remote Islands and Antarctica
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
