Tasmania in July 2015: another cool, mostly dry month

Cool weather was again dominant in Tasmania during July, with runs of cold and frosty nights common. Cold fronts brought snow on a few occasions, and there were some wet days, but for much of the month high pressure ridges near the State meant little rain.

  • Many cold and frosty nights
  • Mostly cool days
  • Below-average rain, especially in the south
  • A few bursts of highland snow
  • Much cooler than last July

Temperatures were again below average in Tasmania during July. Daytime temperatures reached into the mid-teens on only a few days; most days were below average and the 6th, 14th and 26th were particularly cool. Nights were also generally below average, despite a few mild mornings. High pressure systems close to the State brought light winds and clear skies on several occasions. Launceston had 8 consecutive mornings below zero from the 14th to the 21st, which is unusual but not a record (the city had 12 consecutive sub-zero mornings in July 1982).

Despite the generally cool conditions, only a few temperature records were set. Both Devonport Airport and Maydena had their lowest July temperature on record, although lower temperatures have been recorded at nearby sites in the past. A few sites had their lowest mean daily maximum, lowest mean daily minimum, or lowest mean temperature (the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum) since 1995. As well as being cooler than the long-term average, this July was much cooler than either July 2014 or July 2013.

Rainfall was below average in most of Tasmania for July, and especially low on the lower East Coast where several sites reported totals less than 15 mm for the month and Cape Bruny had its lowest July rainfall since 1944. There were several wet days, especially in the north around the 6th (when South Forest registered 74 mm and Bridport had its wettest July day on record), and from the 22nd to 27th, but even these falls were mostly only enough to give near-average totals overall. A cold front that crossed on the 2nd brought snow to about 400 metres, and another on the 27th saw snow to about 500 m with some moderate falls and strong winds; in both cases some highland roads were made impassable.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 3 August 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
