Friday, 1 September 2017 - Seasonal Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC27R0
Tasmania in winter 2017: cold nights, below average rain
Winter brought plenty of cold nights to Tasmania, with a few sites (including Launceston) setting new records. Daytime temperatures were close to average overall. Rainfall was below average for most of the state, with some sites on the East Coast having their driest winter on record.
Rainfall below average
- Winter rainfall was below average for most of Tasmania, with the East Coast particularly dry: some sites had seasonal totals below 20 mm, several had less than 50 mm, and a few had their driest winter on record or their driest for many years
- Rainfall in June was particularly low (the driest June for the State since 2007), especially in the east
- Rainfall totals were close to average in the southwest, and on King Island
- The State's total rainfall was 17% below average, the driest winter since 2008 and well down on the very wet winter last year
Cold nights, but days close to average
- Cold nights were common during July and August, especially inland and in the east
- A few sites had their lowest winter temperature on record
- Some sites (including Launceston) had their lowest winter mean daily minimum temperature on record
- Long runs of cold mornings were common: for example Bushy Park's temperature dropped to 5 °C or lower on all but seven mornings this winter (all of them in June), a record for the site
- The State's mean minimum temperature for winter was 0.46 °C below average,
- Daytime temperatures were close to or a little above average overall, with a few cold days countered by several relatively warm ones; the State's mean maximum temperature for winter was 0.08 °C above average
- Tasmania's mean temperature for winter was 0.18 °C below average, about a degree cooler than winter 2016 but half a degree warmer than winter 2015
Cold nights and below-average rain in Hobart
- Like most of the State, cold nights were common in Hobart: the mean daily minimum temperature at Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 4.7 °C, which is 0.3 °C below the long-term average. The coldest morning was 0.6 °C on 22 June, and the warmest morning was on 12 June when the minimum temperature was 10.2 °C
- Days were warmer than average, with the mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) 13.1 °C, which is 0.8 °C above the long-term average. The warmest day was 18.1 °C on 10 August, and the coolest day was on 18 August when the temperature reached 9.1 °C
- Winter was much drier than average in Hobart, with total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) 108.8 mm, which is 68% of the long-term average

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement was updated on 5 September 2017, to remove a spurious record from Lake St Clair. It had been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Friday 1 September 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
