Highest mean maximum temperature on record
Averaged across Queensland, 2013's mean maximum temperature was the highest
on record at 1.51 °C
above the 1961-90 average of 29.89 °C.
The mean maximum temperature beat the previous 2002 record by a margin of
0.08 °C and is the highest in 104 years. Several sites
recorded
their highest mean daily
maximum temperature.
The mean temperature (average of the maximum and minimum temperatures) was 1.22 °C
above the 1961-90 average of 23.23 °C
and the second-highest on record (just 0.02
°C below the 2005 record). Both 2005 and 2013 are the only
years
since records began in 1910 where the departure from the average is
greater than 1 °C. Many individual sites had their highest mean temperature on record.
The mean minimum temperature was fifth-highest on record at 0.93 °C above the 1961-90 average of
16.57 °C. Croydon equalled its highest minimum temperature on
record.
A record hot start to the year
It was a hot start to the year in Queensland, with extreme heat affecting the state in the first weeks of January. Birdsville Airport reached 49.0 °C on 13 January, the second-highest temperature ever recorded in Queensland (behind 49.5 °C at Birdsville Police Station in 1972) and the highest on record for January. On the same day Thargomindah Airport reached 48.8 °C, the second-highest Queensland January temperature. Numerous records were broken as part of a heatwave that affected large parts of Australia (see Special Climate Statement 43 for more details).
A record warm spring
Warm conditions continued through much of the year. It was the
warmest spring on record for Queensland (and Australia), and September
brought unusually hot days and nights. Julia Creek had the earliest 40
°C spring day ever registered in Queensland on 12 September, then
reached 40.4 °C on the 14th. Numerous site and area records were
broken, as detailed in Special Climate Statement 46.
Tropical cyclones and heavy rainfall
Following the intense heat at the start of the year, there was a switch to wet weather before the end of January - category 1 tropical cyclone Oswald was named on the afternoon of 21 January. Very heavy rainfall during the period 22 to 29 January resulted from ex-tropical cyclone Oswald, along with extensive flooding for much of the east coast of Queensland (see Special Climate Statement 44, and the detailed Queensland Flood Report). Numerous daily rainfall records were broken during this time.
Tropical cyclone Sandra was named on 7 March and reached severe tropical cyclone intensity on the 10th, and tropical cyclone Tim was named on 14 March, but neither crossed the coast. The last tropical cyclone for the year was named Zane on 30 April and brought squally showers and areas of heavy rain, but weakened rapidly to a tropical low as it moved westward over the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Waterspouts, tornadoes and severe thunderstorms occurred several times during the year. At least ten tornadoes or waterspouts were reported between 15 and 27 January, especially in the Bundaberg region. Waterspouts were also reported near Burrum Heads on 24 February, the Gold Coast on 7 April and Maroochydore on 9 April, and off North Stradbroke Island on 28 June. Severe thunderstorms caused damage northwest of Warwick on 13 June. There were several outbreaks of thunderstorms through November and December, including severe storms that brought very large hail and damaging squalls.
The highest annual rainfall was recorded at Bellenden Ker Top Station, with 6991 mm. Babinda and Tully recorded 3801 mm and 3532 mm respectively (all subject to further quality control).
Dry west of the Divide
It was very dry in the northwest and extending into the Northern Territory, along with parts of the central and southern interior extending across the New South Wales border. There were areas of record low rainfall in the northwest, the central and the southern interior. Several sites had their lowest total rainfall on record or their lowest total rainfall for many years. Mt Isa only received 69 mm for the year, its lowest on record (46 years of record), and only 18% of the long-term average of 463 mm. This is the first time Mt Isa has received less than 100 mm of annual rainfall. Tambo had the lowest rainfall on record (133 years of record), receiving only 169.5 mm, 30% below the long term average of 533.9 mm.In contrast, the east coast of the state south of Bowen to the New South Wales border and parts of far northern Queensland received close to or above average annual rainfall, and some patches received up to twice their average annual total. The rain that fell as a result of ex-tropical cyclone Oswald contributed to most of the rain in these areas, particularly across the Capricorn Coast and Wide Bay districts.
Averaged across the whole state, the 489.89 mm was 21% below the long-term average of 623.4 mm.

Notes
A Annual Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 6 pm on Wednesday 1 January 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations
from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to
site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they
cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares
with the climate record for the site,
based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1,
low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high
in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has
fallen this time as a
percentage
of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
