Queensland in December 2013: Hot and dry end to the year

• Third-lowest rainfall on record area-averaged across the state, lowest since 1938
• Rainfall across the state was 26.2 mm, 68% below the December mean of 82.49  mm
• Area-averaged across the state:
• maximum temperature was 1.31 °C above the 1961-90 average of 35.14  °C
• mean temperature was 0.90 °C above the 1961-90 average of  28.50 °C
• minimum temperature was 0.50 °C above the 1961-90 average of 21.86 °C
• Numerous temperature records broken
• Hottest day was at Windorah with 47.3 °C on the 29th
• Warmest days on average at Lake Julius with 33.4 °C

Rainfall

Across the state, area-averaged rainfall was 26.2 mm, 68% below the December mean of 82.49 mm ranking as the third-lowest December total on record since 1900.  The lowest December rainfall on record was recorded in 1938, with 19.65mm.
Rainfall was below average across most of the state, with the dry conditions extending across the southern border into northern New South Wales and also westward into the northwest and bordering Northern Territory. The Gulf Country, Peninsula and remaining areas of the far northern tropics, as well as the northern interior and some areas in the southwestern districts received 20-40% of their average rainfall. The central coast and adjacent inland, through to the Darling Downs and Granite Belt, received similar percentages, with isolated areas recording close to average rainfall.
A vast expanse of the state recorded less than 20% of the average monthly total, with some places recording little or no rainfall.  Rockhampton only recieved 2.8 mm and is the lowest December rainfall for 75 years. Numerous sites had their lowest total December rainfall on record while some other sites had their lowest total December rainfall for at least 20 years.

The highest monthly rainfall was at Coconut Island with 269.8 mm, followed by Mt Sophia with 195.0 mm. Coconut Island had the highest daily rainfall total with 109.4 mm on the 9th.

Temperature

The area-averaged mean temperature for the state was 0.09 °C above the long term 1961-90 average of 28.50 °C. There was little reprieve in the west, with both hot days and warm nights bringing little relief from higher than average temperatures.  The warmest on average was Lake Julius AWS with 32.7 °C. Mt Isa, as well as being dry also had its highest December mean temperature for at least 20 years while Palmerville equalled its lowest December mean temperature for at least 20 years.

Maximum temperature

The area-averaged maximum temperature for the state was 1.31 °C above the long term 1961-90 average of 35.14 °C.  

Very hot days were recorded at the beginning of the month throughout the west, with Birdsville reaching 44.7 °C on the 9th, just slightly warmer than the 44.4 °C recorded on the 2nd. Ballera Gas Field also recorded 44.4 °C on the 9th, while Bedourie Police Station reached 44.3 °C on the same day. Near the end of the month, another string of very hot days saw numerous December temperature records fall with many sites having their highest December temperature on record. The hottest day was recorded at Windorah Post Office with 47.3 °C on the 29th, closely followed by Urandangi Aerodrome with 47.2 °C on the 30th, then Isisford Post Office with 46.6 °C, also on the 30th.
The warmest days on average were at Julia Creek Airport with 41.2 °C, followed by Urandangi Aerodrome with 40.6 °C, followed by Winton Airport with 40.4 °C. 

Minimum temperature

The area-averaged minimum temperature for the state was 0.50 °C above the long term 1961-90 average of 21.86  °C. 

The coldest night was at Applethorpe with 5.5 °C on the 7th, while the warmest night was at Longreach Aero and The Monument Airport, both with 30.7 °C on the 30th.  Longreach had its warmest December night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record. Despite the heat to the west, areas around the north tropical coast, and Capricornia coast extending down to the southeast coast had cooler than average nights. Some places had their lowest December temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest December mean daily minimum temperature on record.

Severe Thunderstorms    

• 5th: Reports of trees and power lines down due to localised wind gusts in Beerwah, Landsborough, and Crohamhurst
• 11th: Roof removed from a house at Broadwater (near Stanthorpe), and multiple trees felled near Inglewood
• 13th: Hail with a diameter of 3 cm was reported at Heritage Park
• 14th: Hail with a diameter 4.5 cm reported near Boonah, and 'golf ball-sized' hail at Mt Barney
• 16th: Hail with a diameter of 4 cm reported from Dalveen
• 27th: 'Golf ball-sized' hail reported at Kilcoy around 2:50 pm
• 29th: Widespread power outages across the greater southeast due to thunderstorms
• 30th:
• 'Golf ball-sized' hail observed at Cooyar at 5:00 pm, 'grape-sized' hail observed at Nanango at 5:15 pm, and hail with a diameter of 3 cm reported at Kingaroy at 5:50 pm;
• Roof of house removed at Hughenden around 8:00 pm;
• 100km/hr wind gust recorded at May Downs at 8:40 pm;
• 31st: 
• Hail with a diameter of 2 cm reported at Kingaroy at 3:30 pm, and "golf ball-sized" hail at Kumbia (southwest of Kingaroy) at 3:45 pm, along with numerous reports of 5 - 6 cm hail around the Kingaroy area; 
• 'Golf ball-sized' hail observed at Vale View (south of Toowoomba) at around 5:35 pm, and hail with a diameter of 2 cm was observed south of Toowoomba at 5:50 pm

Wind

The strongest wind gust was at Julia Creek Airport with 119 km/h on the 30th, associated with the passage of a severe thunderstorm.
