Hottest September on record for Queensland

• Exceptionally warm start to spring (see Special Climate Statement 46) --> Update due 1st October <--
  
• Statewide area-averaged maximum temperature was the highest on record (4.12 °C above the long term average of 28.67 °C)
  
• Statewide area-averaged mean temperature was the highest on record (3.12 °C above the long term average of 21.11 °C), and is the warmest mean temperature anomaly for any month in Queensland
  
• Statewide area-averaged minimum temperature was the sixth warmest on record (2.12 °C above the long term average of 13.56 °C)
• 121 site records broken across the state including:
• 39 daily temperature records (30 daily maximum temperatures records broken, 9 daily minimum temperature records broken)
  
• 82 monthly temperature records (37 monthly maximum temperature records broken, 6 monthly minimum temperature records broken, and 39 monthly mean temperature records broken)
  
• Statewide area-averaged maximum temperature was the highest on record for the previous 12 month period, and the 2nd highest on record for the year to date (January to September)
• Statewide area-averaged mean temperature was the highest on record for the previous 12 month period as well as the highest on record for year to date (January to September)
• Statewide, the area-averaged rainfall was 4.07 mm, below the long term mean of 12.89 mm.
• Around 30% of Queensland recorded its the hottest September day on record on the 26th

Temperature

Area-averaged across the state, the mean temperature was 3.12 °C above the long term average of 21.11 °C, making it the hottest September since records began in 1910.

The mean temperature is over 2 °C warmer than last September, and the recent 12 month period (October 2012 to September 2013) is also the highest on record (24.37 °C), exceeding the previous record set in 1997/1998 by 0.05 °C. It is also the highest January to September on record (23.31 °C) beating the previous record set in 1998 by 0.08 °C .

39 sites in Queensland recorded their highest mean temperature on record.

Maximum temperature

Area-averaged across the state, the maximum temperature was 4.12 °C above the long term average, exceeding the previous record by more than 1 °C. It is over 2 °C warmer than September, with the warmer than usual conditions extend into bordering states of New South Wales and South Australia, and the Northern Territory..

The hottest day was on the 26th, with Taroom Post Office reaching a maximum temperature of 41.4 °C. 

A total of 67 maximum temperatures records were broken at Bureau weather stations all over the state.
30 stations had their highest September temperature on record and 37 sites had their highest September mean daily maximum temperature on record. 

Minimum temperature

Area-averaged across the state, the minimum temperature was the sixth warmest on record.

The coldest night was at Applethorpe with 0.4 °C on the 21st, a vast contrast to its highest daily maximum of 31.6 C that occurred on the 26th. 

A total of 15 minimum temperature records were broken, with 9 sites had their warmest September night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record and 6 sites had their  highest September mean daily minimum temperature on record. 

Rainfall

Averaged over all of Queensland, the September rainfall was 4.07 mm, below the mean of 12.89 mm.

Only small parts in the far north received above average rainfall. Parts of the southern interior, central interior extending to the east coast, the central coast and adjacent inland and a large expanse over the northwest recorded below average rainfall.

The wettest overall was South Johnstone Exp Stn with 112.8 mm, and the highest daily rainfall total was at Tomewin - Tallowood with 61.0 mm on the 17th.
