The statewide average rainfall for 2007 was 542.8 mm, compared to the historical average1 of 566.0 mm. The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded an average of 472.9 mm compared to the historical average of 503.5 mm. This is the seventh consecutive year of below average rainfall for NSW and the MDB.
Following the decay of the 2006/2007 El Niño event, the first six months of 2007 brought promising rainfall to much of NSW. This culminated in June when a series of East Coast Low events brought significant rainfall to the eastern half of NSW, including major flooding in the Hunter. However, dry conditions returned to the state in July and persisted across much of the state until November, despite the development of a La Niña event in the Pacific Ocean.
La Niña conditions were slow to develop through 2007 with the usual rainfall response inhibited by a counter influence from the Indian Ocean. The late development of the La Niña event in the Pacific resulted in a less than typical rainfall response across eastern Australia. Additionally, Australia's climate over winter and spring was influenced by unusually cool ocean temperatures to the north and northwest of the continent - a state known as the 'Positive Dipole Mode' of the Indian Ocean Dipole. The decay of the Positive Dipole Mode coincided with the return of above average rainfall to NSW in November.
Although above average rainfall was experienced at the start and end of the year, 2007 is still considered a drought year for NSW, and represents a continuation of the protracted dry period affecting the the southern half of the state since 1996, and the northern half since 2001.

2007 has been the warmest year on record for NSW and the MDB (statewide average mean temperatures). It also marked the eleventh consecutive year of above average annual NSW and MDB maximum, minimum and mean temperatures, and a year in which the state experienced strong monthly temperature contrasts.
The annual mean temperature for the state was 18.4ºC, which is 1.1ºC above the historical average1 of 17.3ºC. This makes 2007 the warmest year on record for statewide average mean temperatures, exceeding the previous record of 18.3ºC recorded in 1914 and 2005. The annual mean temperature for the MDB was 18.8ºC, which is 1.1ºC above the historical average of 17.7ºC. This makes 2007 the warmest year on record for MDB average mean temperatures, exceeding the previous record of 18.7ºC recorded in 2005.
State mean and maximum temperatures were above average for all months of 2007 except June. It was also the warmest May on record for statewide average maximum temperatures, and October was the equal warmest on record for statewide average mean temperatures.
In a marked contrast to the record warmth of May and October, the state experienced the 2nd coldest June on record for statewide average maximum and mean temperatures. State minimum temperatures were also above average for all months of 2007, except June and July. The cold June temperatures were a result of highly unusual heavy rains in the tropics and subtropics, and a series of East Coast Low events. In contrast to June, large parts of southern NSW experienced record warm minimum temperatures during November.
The statewide average maximum temperature for the year was 25.1ºC, which is 1.2ºC above the historical average of 23.9ºC. This makes 2007 the eighth warmest year on record for statewide average maximum temperatures. It has also been the sixth warmest year on record for the MDB, with the average maximum temperature 1.2ºC above the historical average of 24.5ºC .
The statewide average minimum temperature in 2007 was 11.9ºC, which is 1.1ºC above the historical average of 10.8ºC. This makes 2007 the second warmest year on record for statewide average minimum temperatures. It has also been the second warmest year on record for the MDB, with the average maximum temperature 1.1ºC above the historical average of 10.9ºC.
The statewide average diurnal temperature range (the difference between the average maximum and minimum temperature) for the year was 13.2ºC, equals the historical average of 13.2ºC.

Jump to: Extremes Maps Records Summaries Notes the top
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Thursday 3 January 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
