Record dry caps off a year of extremes - Tasmania in 2006

Summary

2006 was extraordinarily dry across the state, with some sites reporting their driest year for 100 years. Tasmania also experienced some record hot and cold temperatures, several extremely windy days and a number of unseasonal bushfires, snow, frost and hail events throughout the year.

Details

A parched island: This year will be remembered as one of the driest since records began. Along the north coast and into the southeast many sites have had their driest year on record - including Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport. Only in the southwest corner was rainfall close to average.
The first three months of the year were drier than average across most of the state, particularly the central north, Midlands and southeast, despite a few good rainfall events from thunderstorms and cold outbreaks with snow. A change on 1 April began a cold, wet and windy phase which continued into the first half of May; rainfall in this period was above average in the west, south and central areas as well as in the Bass Strait Islands. May was to be the last month of the year with significant rain, although there were small top-ups in July and September. Especially dry months included June, August, October and November when many lowest monthly rainfall records were broken.

Warm and cool days: Apart from the west coast, it was up to 2°C warmer than average during January, February and March, while April, May and June were alot colder than average. Again, it was warmer than average towards the end of winter with some record warm days reported at some sites towards the end of August. September and October were also generally warm, but by November, daytime temperatures were close to normal again. Despite late rain, the year ended with a generally warm and smoky December as several major bushfires burnt out thousands of hectacres of forest in parts of the east and south.
Across the whole year, mean daily maximum (daytime) temperatures were slightly cooler than average in the west and slightly warmer than average in the east.

Chilly nights: The year began with slightly warmer than average overnight temperatures, although they began to drop below average by March. A sequence of cold fronts and southwesterly winds ensured April, May and June had overnight minima 1 to 2°C below average. Nights in July and August were a little warmer than average, but cold outbreaks followed by clear skies during October and November brought many cold nights, with widespread late-season frosts on at least 16 spring nights.
Across the year, mean daily minimum (overnight) temperatures were up to one degree below average across the state. Several sites (including Launceston) recorded their lowest mean daily minimum temperatures.

Windy blasts: It was very windy on several occasions, especially around 21 September and again around 12 and 18 October. The strongest gust for the year came on 21 September with 174 km/h at Maatsuyker Island - the fourth highest wind gust ever recorded in the state. The next day, the waverider buoy off Cape Sorell registered a huge wave with a peak height of around 15 metres.

A year of extremes, records and notable events

Records were broken for both monthly highest and monthly lowest temperatures, as well as plenty of monthly lowest rainfall records - although April saw a few highest rainfall records.

These links are to the routine monthly summaries prepared at the time, based on provisional data. Each will open in a new browser window.
January temperatures soared towards the end of the month, peaking at 39.9°C at Hobart Airport on the 22nd with many other sites reaching into the high 30s that day (the 40.6°C reported at Campania has since been discounted).
February brought snow to low levels early in the month, with some sites reporting their coldest February day. Later in the month there were hailstones the size of tennis balls on Bruny Island.
March was exceptionally dry, with very few rain-bearing systems affecting the state. There were also a few days of warm to hot weather throughout the month, notably on the 3rd, 12th, 25th and 26th.
April started with a cold outbreak that heralded a period of cold, wet and windy weather that saw several lowest April temperatures registered, and even let some west coast sites have their highest April rainfall on record.
May was also very cold, and on the morning of the 30th, the temperature dropped to −10.5°C at Liawenee, the lowest May temperature ever recorded in Tasmania.
June was another record breaking month with dozens of "lowest total rainfall" and many "lowest minimum temperature" records set as an extended cold and dry spell descended over the state.
July had a few mild to warm days, when both Marrawah and Wynyard set new records for the highest July temperature, but also a few cold spells which saw snow below below 500 metres in some areas.
August had a few warm days especially on the 31st, when both Campania and Scamander broke the previous highest August temperature for Tasmania with 25.0°C and 24.9 °C respectively.
September was a windy month, with gusts over 90 km/h common across the state. September also stands out as the only month in 2006 where no long-term monthly rainfall or temperature records were broken.
October was extraordinary, with all sorts of records broken at different sites. These included the hottest day, coldest night, warmest night and lowest rainfall. The extreme weather began on the 12th with temperatures in the mid−30s and strong winds that fanned bushfires across the state. This was followed by a period of very cold nights with severe frosts, and then hail and snow to near sea-level after a cold outbreak on the 27th and 28th.
November was another month of extremes, with several "lowest November temperatures on record" set as snow to sea-level and hail battered the state. Severe frosts also caused major damage to Tasmania's crops and orchards.
December rounded out the year with hot and windy conditions that fanned major bushfires in the south and east, burnings tens of thousands of hectares of forest and destroying many buildings, especially in and around Scamander. Even the cold and wet snap towards the end of the month did little to ease the long term rainfall deficiencies.

A wet year for Macquarie Island

On Macquarie Island, 1500 km southeast of Hobart but actually part of Tasmania, the weather was quite different to that in the rest of the state. Although not as wet as the record-breaking 2005, the total rainfall of 1097 mm is well above the 960 mm long-term average. But when most of Tasmania was shivering through a cold and wet April, Macquarie Island had one of its warmest and driest Aprils on record. At the other extreme, Macquarie Island had its coldest November on record.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available on Wednesday 3 January 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.

The Rank indicates about where rainfall this time ranks in the climate record for the site.
