Friday, 1 December 2006 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
A cold outbreak brought snow to low levels in the middle of the
November, but yielded only small amounts of precipitation, ensuring
that the month was again much drier than normal in most areas -
although without the record-breaking figures of recent months. Daytime
temperatures were well down on normal in the south, apart from a warm
burst on the last day. Several damaging frosts occurred, with overnight
temperatures below normal across the state.

Another dry month: The repeated southerlies meant that a
patch of the southeast and parts of King Island had near-normal rain
for the month, but these were very much the exception. Although only a
handful of sites in the north had their lowest
total November rainfall on record, (and a few more had their lowest for at least 20 years),
much of the north and east was once again much drier than normal. The
highest rainfall for the whole month was 158.6 mm at Mount Read,
well down on what would be expected for November.
Cold outbreak brings snow: From the 5th to the 16th, daytime
temperatures were mostly below normal. A surge of cold air from the far
south pushed rapidly over Tasmania - and the rest of eastern Australia
- on the 15th. In Hobart the temperature struggled to reach
double digits, then plummeted below 4°C in a shower of hail in the
afternoon. Mount Wellington did not get above −1.3°C on the 15th,
and Mount Read did not get warmer than −1.1°C; these are the
second- and third-coldest November maximum temperatures ever recorded
in Tasmania. The especially cold air made its mark on Macquarie Island
several days earlier, when it had its coldest-ever
November
temperature on the 12th.
A few hot days: The first few days, and from the 17th on,
were mostly warmer than normal. The 21st was especially warm for all
but the east coast, and a number of sites in
the north and Midlands topped 29°C. The last few days of the month
were also quite warm, with temperatures in the high 20s at some
centres. In all but the central north the cold days dominated the warm
ones, so temperatures averaged across the month were below normal,
typically by 0.5 to 1.5°C. In the central north, average daytime
temperatures were 0.5 to 1°C above normal.
Late-season frosts: Cold nights were very much to the fore
during November, especially around the 9th, 15th and 25th. Periods of
light winds and clear skies following cold days provided perfect
conditions for
frost to occur. Coming so late in the year, these caused enormous
damage to fruit and other crops. Average overnight temperatures were
below normal across the state, typically by between 0.5 and 1.5°C.
Some sites in the east had their lowest November
temperature on record, generally on the 15th or the 16th. Bicheno
and Scamander had their lowest November mean
daily minimum temperature on record.
A separate summary has also been prepared for all of spring.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at noon on Friday 1 December 2006. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The Rank indicates about where rainfall this time ranks in the climate record for the site.
