Rainfall

Canberra Airport recorded a total rainfall of 85.0 mm during November, which is above the historical average1 of 64.5 mm, but slightly less than the November 2007 total of 95.4 mm. The rain fell on 13 rain days (average 10 rain days), with the majority of rain falling early in the month with the passage of a low pressure trough, and later in the month, under the influcence of a low pressure system off the southeast NSW coast.

See a map of total rainfall. See a map of rainfall deciles.

Temperature

The mean maximum temperature at Canberra Airport was 23.5°C, which is 0.9°C above the historical average of 22.6°C. However, despite being above average, this was the coolest maximum temperature recorded for November since 2005 (22.8°C). Maximum temperatures at Canberra Airport varied from a low of 13.1°C on the 22nd, to a high of 32.9°C on the 14th. This was also the warmest day recorded throughout the ACT for the month of November. Warm north to northwesterly winds combined with the sunny conditions in Canberra during November would have contributed to these warmer maximum temperatures.

Night-time temperatures were also above average, with a mean minimum temperature of 10.6°C, compared to the historical average of 8.7°C. At Canberra Airport, minimum temperatures ranged from a low of 5.0°C on the 23rd to a high of 15.7°C on the 15th.

See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

See a map of mean minimum temperatures. See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.

Wind

The prevailing wind direction over Canberra during the mornings (9am) was northwesterly, around 23% of the time, compared to the average of 20%. In the afternoons (3pm), the prevailing wind was westerly, with 33% of the observations observed from this direction. Normally at this time of day and year, the prevailing winds are from the north-west (33% of the time).

Daily rainfall

Most values are the precipitation in the 24 hours to 9 am on the day indicated. Days marked with »» are part of a longer accumulation, which is marked like this on the final day. Values over 100 mm have been rounded to the nearest whole millimetre. Days marked with - have a rainfall report of zero; days left blank have no rainfall report (which often indicates no rain fell).

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 December 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

1Averages:  historical average temperatures and rainfall are based on all available records.

Normals are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
