Dry and warm conditions persist

 

Summary

  • Continued dry conditions across most of the state apart from the north east
  • Sixth highest statewide November maximum temperatures on record (records since 1950)
  • Very high diurnal temperature ranges, sixth highest on record, with hot days and cold nights across the dry south of the state

Rainfall

The state experienced another dry month as the El Niño induced drought continued across eastern Australia. The conditions however were not as severe as those in October with large parts of the south and northeast of the state recording close to average rainfall during November. The far north west of the state was worst affected by the continuing drought with some parts recording the lowest November rainfall totals on record. The only area of the state to receive above average rainfall for the month, as in previous months, was the northeast.

The statewide average rainfall for November was 30.5 mm, lower than the historical average1 of 45.5 mm. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average rainfall 25.9 mm compared to the historical average of 41.1 mm.

Temperature

Maximum temperatures were much above average across most of the state during November. The far northeast of the state was the only area to experience close to average maximum temperatures. The statewide average maximum temperature was 2.53ºC above the historical November average1 of 27.8ºC, the sixth warmest on record (records since 1950). The statewide averaged mean temperature for November was also the sixth warmest on record, 1.8ºC above the historical average 20.6ºC.

November minimum temperatures were also above average across most of the state. Central areas of the state recorded very much above average minimum temperatures. Areas of the state to the east of the Great Divide experienced close to average minimum temperatures. The statewide averaged minimum temperature was 1.04ºC above the historical average of 13.4ºC.

November saw a continuation of large diurnal temperature ranges being experienced across the state. The average diurnal temperature range for the state in November is 14.4ºC, this month the state experienced a range 1.5ºC higher, the sixth highest on record. As the drought continued, low soil and atmospheric moisture contents enabled the land surface to heat rapidly during the day and then cool quickly at night as heat radiated easily through clear dry night skies.

Other phenomena

An unseasonably late strong cold outbreak with associated snowfalls affected the state on the 15 and 16 November. Snowfalls were reported across all areas of the ranges above 1000 m and even briefly pushed north into Queensland. Snow falls in the northern tablelands are rare in November with Armidale recording November snow for the first time in 41 years. Many new lowest monthly maximum and minimum temperature records were set during this event (see Records tables below).

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Friday 1 December 2006. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.

The Rank indicates about where rainfall this time ranks in the climate record for the site.
