New South Wales in December 2006
El Niño's warm and dry conditions persist

 

Summary

  • Continued dry conditions across most of the state apart from the far north west
  • Sixth consecutive month of above average statewide maximum temperatures
  • Below to very much below average minimum temperatures east of the divide

Rainfall

The El Niño induced drought continued across eastern Australia during December. Despite a widespread fall late in December much of the south and east of the state, nevertheless, experienced below average to very much below average rainfall during the month. Dry conditions even spread into the northeast which had previously recorded average to above average rainfall through winter and spring. The only area of the state to record above average rainfall was in the far northwest.

The statewide average rainfall for December was 23.5 mm, less than half of the historical average1 of 50.7 mm. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 20.1 mm compared to the historical average of 46.5 mm.

Some sites had their lowest total December rainfall on record.

Temperature

Maximum temperatures were above average through much of central and southern NSW. In contrast, the northeast of the state experienced below average maximum temperatures. The statewide average maximum temperature was 0.6 ºC above the historical December average1 of 30.1ºC, and the sixth consecutive month of above average maximum temperatures.

Minimum temperatures were above average in a band extending across the central third of the state. Most of the state east of the divide experienced below to very much below average minimum temperatures during December. The statewide average minimum temperature was 0.4ºC above the historical December average of 16.1ºC.

Some sites had their highest December temperature on record.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Wednesday 3 January 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
