A very dry and warm end to autumn

Rainfall
May saw a continuation of the dry conditions that have affected NSW since March, with below to very much below average rainfall reported throughout much of the state during the month. The statewide average rainfall was 10.7 mm, which is well below the historical average1 of 49.2 mm. This is the 5th driest May on record for NSW (current driest is 4.0 mm in May 1902), and the driest May since 2006. This May represents a continuation of the drying trend experienced across south-east Australia, at this time of year, since the mid 1990s.
The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) also recorded below average rainfall, with a basin-wide average of 13.5 mm well below the historical average of 45.0 mm. This is the 12th driest May on record for the Murray Darling Basin (MDB) (current driest is 2.9 mm in May 1912), and the driest May since 2006.
This pattern of below average rainfall can be attributed to the persistant high pressure systems that dominated the state's weather during the month. Troughs that moved through the state mid and late month brought only scattered light falls to some coastal and inland locations.
Some sites had their lowest total May rainfall on record.

Temperature
Warm days and cool nights prevailed during May. Persistent high pressure systems over the state throughout the month resulted in clear skies, light winds and dry conditions, producing a strong diurnal temperature range.
Maximum temperatures were above to very much above the historical average throughout the state, with the exception of the far south/southeast and parts of the Illawarra, which recorded average or slightly below average maximum temperatures. The statewide average maximum temperature was 20.8°C, which is 1.5°C above the historical average1 of 19.3°C. This is the 6th warmest May on record for statewide average maximum temperatures (current warmest is 21.5°C set in 2007), and the 8th consecutive May with above average maximum temperatures.
Minimum temperatures were below to very much below average in the northeastern half of the state, and average to below average in the southwestern half. The statewide average minimum temperature was 6.4°C, which is 1.1°C below the historical average of 7.5 °C.
The large variation between day-time and night-time temperatures in May resulted in a significant diurnal temperature range, with a statewide average diurnal temperature range (difference between the mean minimum and mean maximum temperature) of 14.5°C, which is 2.7°C above the historical average of 11.8°C. This is the 4th highest diurnal temperature range on record for May.

Other phenomena
A high pressure system located to the south of Tasmania on the 23rd and 24th of May brought very cool, dry air to Alpine regions, with record low temperatures recorded at Thredbo Village, Perisher Ski Centre and Charlotte Pass (see table below).

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 2 June 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
