Average rainfall for coastal Sydney but wetter in the west

Rainfall
Most of the Greater Sydney area recorded above average rainfall during December except along the coast where close to average rainfall was recorded. Sydney Observatory Hill received a total of 54.2 mm, which is only 70% of the historical average of 77.9 mm. Although coastal Sydney recorded average or slightly below average rainfall during the month, suburbs away from the coast and the far west recorded above average rainfall, with some western suburbs recording their wettest December since 1992. The wettest suburb was Merrylands which recorded 121 mm for the month. Most of December's rain fell early in the month from thunderstorms on the 8th and from a low pressure system on the 13th.
There were 10 days of rain at Observatory Hill, which is slightly below the average of 11 days. Much of the month's rain fell on the 13th when a low pressure system passed over southern NSW causing heavy rain in the Sydney region. The heaviest falls were in the far west where Camden recorded 70 mm on the 13th, their wettest December day in 35 years of record. Some south-western suburbs also received heavy rain on the 8th from a thunderstorm causing flash flooding in the Bankstown-Panania area.
Between 80 and 100 mm of rain was recorded over the Warragamba Dam catchment during December, which is close to the historic average. Sydney's storage levels remained virtually unchanged during December at 63% of capacity. Some sites had their highest December daily rainfall on record.
Temperatures
Most of Greater Sydney experienced slightly above average maximum temperatures during December, except for far western suburbs which recorded slightly below average maximum temperatures. Sydney Observatory Hill recorded an average maximum of 25.9 °C, which is 0.7 °C above the historical average of 25.2 °C. However, Richmond's average maximum of 27.1°C was 1.6°C below the historic average. Increased cloud and rain in western suburbs contributed to the lower average temperatures in the west.
The highest temperature at Observatory Hill during December was 34.8 °C on the 6th while the highest in the Sydney metropolitan area was 37.1 °C at Camden Airport AWS also on the 6th.
Average minimum temperatures across the Sydney region were generally slightly below the historic average except for coastal suburbs which recorded slightly above average minimum temperatures. The official site at Sydney Observatory Hill recorded an average of 18.1 °C, which is 0.6 °C above the historical average. This is the 12th consecutive December with above average minimum temperatures at Observatory Hill. However, Richmond in the far NW recorded an average minimum of 14.5 °C or 1.5 °C below the historic average and the lowest for December since 1996.
The lowest temperature at Observatory Hill during December was 14.3 °C on the 21st while the lowest in the Sydney metropolitan area was 8.4 °C at Richmond RAAF also on the 21st.
Wind
Prevailing winds in coastal Sydney were E-NE during December with the occasional southerly change. The highest wind gust was 80 km/h at Holsworthy on the 13th associated with a low pressure system over southern NSW. A similar gust of 80 km/h at Terrey Hills AWS on the 18th was associated with a southerly change.
Other phenomena
The average daily sunshine in Sydney during December was 8.0 hours per day, very close to the historic average of 7.9 hours per day. There were 3 days of thunderstorms in Sydney during the month, on the 8th, 18th and 27th, compared to the historic average of 4 storms. The most severe was on the 8th with very heavy rain in some southwestern suburbs causing local flash flooding. Bankstown recorded 25 mm in about half an hour with the highest fall from the storm recorded at Merrylands with 42mm.
King tides of up to 2.05 metres on 15 December combined with a heavy SE swell from a low pressure system in the Tasman Sea caused minor flooding in low lying areas of Tempe in Sydney's south and caused a harbour wall to collapse at Neutral Bay on the north shore.
