New South Wales in February 2009

From Heatwaves to Floods

Summary

  • Above average statewide maximum and minimum temperatures.
  • Above average rainfall for the northern half of the state.
  • Below average rainfall for the southwest of NSW.

Rainfall

The NSW statewide average rainfall for summer was 66 mm, compared to the historical average of 50 mm. There was a strong spatial contrast between rainfall experienced between the southwest and northern halves of NSW. The south and western border of the state received below average rainfall with some locations recording their lowest rainfall on record. By contrast the northen half of the state received above average rainfall and record highest rainfall for some locations (see links to tables and map below). This was due to an East Coast Low (ECL) pressure system between the 13th - 17th of the month which produced heavy falls in many Mid North Coast locations and resulted in flooding in some towns (for more information see phenomena section below).

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin wide average of 42 mm, which is very close to the historical average of 41 mm.

Temperature

Average maximum temperature for the state was 32.3°C which is 0.9°C above the historical average of 31.4°C. A large area stretching from the southwestern and western border of NSW through inland NSW including most of the ACT to the Mid North Coast was up to 2°C above average. An area covering most of the South West Slopes and half of the Riverina district in the southwest was up to 3°C above average. This was partly due to the slow moving high pressure system which produced a heatwave in South East Australia in late January which continued into early February. Clear conditions also contributed to the higher than average maximum temperatures in the southwest. The remainder of the state was within a degree of the historical average.

Average minimum temperature for the state was 18.2°C which is 0.7°C above the historical average of 17.6°C. A vast area stretching across the central and southern inland and northwestern corner of NSW, was up to 2°C above average. The rest of the state, including the northern half and southeastern NSW, was within a degree of the average. Warm overnight temperatures were partly associated with the same high pressure system which produced the heatwave in late January and early February.

Other phenomena

A heatwave which began in late January over much of South Eastern Australia and continued into early February resulted in many location recording their highest temperatures on record in southwest NSW (see record tables below). Major rainfall produced by an East Coast Low (ECL) between 13th - 17th of the month caused flooding in various locations on the Mid North Coast, including Maitland and Bellingen. Bourke recorded it's highest daily rainfall of 198 mm on the 14th February. This caused major flooding of all streets, road closures and flooding of over 20 houses in the area.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 2 January 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
