Queensland Monthly Climate Summary November 2006

Summary

Dry in the north and west of the state.

A cold snap in mid-November brought record cold temperatures to the southeast and central Queensland.

A hot spell at the end of the month brought record hot temperatures to the southern and central interior.

Rainfall

November rainfall was below average over much of northern and western Queensland, though some parts received rainfall close to average. The best of any rainfall came early in the month, associated with a surface and upper trough which moved eastwards across the state bringing rain, showers and thunderstorms to many parts. Thunderstorm falls associated with this system contributed to the monthly total of 216.5 mm at Glenlyon Dam, which is over twice their November average of 85 mm, and the highest total in their 33 years of record. In contrast, many places in the north and west of the state recorded no rainfall during the month, though not for the first time in their record. These include Birdsville, Urandangi, Burketown and Charters Towers.

Maximum temperature

Mean maximum temperatures were much warmer than normal over the southern interior and much of western Queensland, as well as parts of the Carpentaria, western Cape York Peninsula and the central coast and highlands. Elsewhere mean maximum temperatures were within a degree of average. At the end of the month, hot northwesterly winds led to record daily maximum temperatures for November in western areas.

The hottest day was 48.5°C at Birdsville Airport on the 30th. The coldest day was 14.4°C at Applethorpe on the 16th.

Minimum temperature

Mean minimum temperatures were well above average over the southern interior and southwest of the state, while parts of western Cape York Peninsula, central Queensland, the North Coast and Carpentaria were much cooler than average. Elsewhere mean minimum temperatures were within a degree of average. The hot spell at the end of the month also brought record high minimum temperatures to a number of places while a cold snap on the 17th, which brought snow to southern states and reports of some sleet on the Granite Belt, led to record cold daily minimum temperatures in the Southeast and parts of Central Queensland.

The coldest night was 0.0°C at Stanthopre and Applethorpe on the 17th. The warmest night was 32.6°C at Thargomindah on the 28th.

Some places had their warmest November night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.
