Dry and cold July in Queensland


Summary

Only parts of north Queensland received above average rainfall in July.  The persistent low night time temperatures along with the lack of rain ensured dry, wintery conditions in the state.

Rainfall

July brought no significant rainfall to much needed areas of southern and central Queensland. Although rainfall totals are usually low in July, only parts of the northern districts received above average falls.  Refer to the maps of total rainfall and rainfall deciles.


Moist onshore winds produced some showers in the North Tropical Coast, with the highest daily rainfall of 47 mm at Topaz Alert and 46 mm at Jarra Creek Alert on the 25th, followed by 47 mm at Topaz Alert on the 26th.


Brisbane recorded 1 mm rainfall for the month, well below the long term average of 56.5 mm.  For more details see the summary table.

Temperatures

Only pockets of the south west of the state reached average minimum temperatures in July.  Coastal districts were 2 - 4 degrees below average, and the remainder of the state 1 - 2 degrees below average.  See maps of mean minimum temperatures and minimum temperature anomalies.


A deep low over the Tasman Sea combined with a high pressure system over South Australia on the 19th circulated cool, dry southerly winds into the state. Wintery conditions persisted for several days resulting in some record low minimum temperatures.


Amberley had a record minimum temperature of −4.8°C on the 19th (previous record −4.5°C, 66 years of record) and Gympie recorded −4.3°C on the 20th (previous record −3.0, 42 years of record).


The coldest night was −8.8°C at Stanthorpe on the 19th and the warmest nights were 24.3°C at Coconut Island on the 9th and 20th, and at Horn Island on the 26th.


Maximum temperatures were average in the southwest and southern districts of the state.  The rest of the state had below average daytime temperatures for the month, with parts of the northern districts 1 - 2 degrees below.  See maps of mean maximum temperatures and maximum temperature anomolies.


The hottest day was 32.6°C at Weipa on the 26th, Scherger on the 28th and Burketown on the 29th.  Stanthorpe recorded the coldest day of 8.3°C on the 9th.
