Queensland in October 2007

Summary

Thunderstorm activity during October has brought some short term rainfall relief to parts of the state. However, long term rainfall deficiencies still persist in the south of the state, with pockets of the south east only receiving around 40 - 60 percent of the long term average rainfall for the year to date.

Rainfall

The second week of October saw widespread thunderstorm activity over much of the state.  Severe storms in some locations produced destructive winds and hail damage, as well as localised flash flooding.  During the last week of the month, scattered to widespread thunderstorms again affected many parts of the state, with some severe storms in central and southern Queensland.  Average to above average rainfall totals resulted over most of the state for October.

However, the far south west received very little rainfall, and long term deficiencies still persist over a large area of southern Queensland.    

The wettest overall place for October was Springbrook Road with 207.4mm, due to several days of thunderstorm activity in the area.

On the 29th, thunderstorms over the south east resulted in the highest daily rainfall totals for the month, with 123mm at Kerkin Road Alert, 101mm at Yarrahappini and 98mm at Norwell Alert.

Brisbane received 55.2mm of rain in October (long term average is 75.4mm).

Temperature

Both mean maximum (day-time) and mean minimum (overnight) temperatures were above average over southern Queensland during October.  

Northern Queensland received near average maximum and minimum temperatures, with large areas of the Peninsula experiencing up to 1 °C below average for day-time temperatures.

The hottest day was 43.6 °C at Boulia Airport on the 28th, and the coldest night was 1.9 °C at Stanthorpe on the 1st.

Some sites had their warmest October night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Brisbane recorded a mean maximum temperature of 27.9 °C (1.8 °C above the long term average), and a mean minimum temperature of 17.5 °C (1.7 °C above the long term average) for October.

Wind

The strongest recorded wind gust was 180 km/h at Gayndah Airport, followed by 144 km/h at Emerald Airport, both on the 29th.  The wind gusts were associated with severe thunderstorms in these districts.
