Queensland in January 2008


An offshore low pressure system, combined with an upper trough over southeast Queensland produced some high daily rainfall totals over the southeast of the state early in the month.  From the 8th to the 19th of January ex tropical cyclone Helen followed a long track from the southeastern Gulf of Carpentaria to the Townsville region, then down through the centre of Queensland, bringing flooding rains to large areas of the state.

Rainfall

Some high daily rainfall totals occurred over the southeast of the state during the first week of the month, under the influence of an upper trough over the area and a low pressure system off the southeast Queensland coast.  Many high daily rainfall totals also occurred in the vicinity of ex tropical cyclone Helen as it followed a long track from the southeastern Gulf of Carpentaria over to the Townsville region, then down through the centre of Queensland from the 8th to the 19th.  Some sites had their highest January daily rainfall total on record and some had their highest daily rainfall total on record for any month.

The highest daily rainfalls recorded in the month were 364.0 mm at Upper Springbrook Alert on the 5th, followed by 353.2 mm at Proserpine Airport on the 14th, followed by 325.0 mm at Glengaven (in the Gold Coast Hinterland) on the 5th.

The highest monthly rainfall total was 1048.6 mm at Glengaven, followed by 841.5 mm at Springbrook Road. Some sites had their highest total January rainfall on record under the influence of ex tropical cyclone Helen.  However, despite the high rainfall and flooding over large areas of the state, southwestern Cape York Peninsula and much of western Queensland received below to very much below average rainfall for the month.  See a map of total rainfall. Brisbane received a total of 184.4 mm of rain in January, while the long-term January average for Brisbane is 159.6 mm.  

Temperature

Mean maximum temperatures for the month were above average over eastern parts of Cape York Peninsula, the Barron North Coast and western parts of Western districts, the Lower Carpentaria and the far southwest of the state.  Elsewhere they were below average for January, reaching 4−5 degrees below the long-term average over parts of the northern Maranoa.

The hottest day was 44.3°C, at Birdsville Airport on the 8th and the coldest day was 20.1°C, at Applethorpe on the 4th.  Some sites had their coldest January day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

The warmest days on average were at Birdsville Airport with 41.7°C.  The coolest days on average were at Applethorpe with 23.8°C.  Some sites had their lowest January mean daily maximum temperature on record.

Mean minimum temperatures for the month were below average over the West Darling Downs, Maranoa and Warrego, northeast Upper Western district and Central Highlands and Lowlands.  Elsewhere they were generally slightly above average, reaching 2−3 degrees above the long-term January average over the far southwest of the state and western parts of Western districts.

The coldest night was 11.5°C at Applethorpe on the 25th.  The warmest night was 32.8°C at Birdsville Airport on the 16th.  

The coolest nights on average were at Applethorpe with 15.4°C.  The warmest nights on average were at Birdsville Airport with 27.9°C.  

Some sites had their warmest January night (highest mean daily minimum temperature) on record.

Some sites had their lowest January temperature on record.

Brisbane's mean maximum temperature for the month was 28.9°C (0.5°C below the long-term average for January) and the mean minimum temperature was 21.5°C (0.8°C above the long-term average for January).

They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.  *In this case, normals from a nearby suitable site may be included to calculate statistics  (these are marked with an *).
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of "normal" rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
