Queensland in April 2008

Summary

Averaged over the state:
- Rainfall was the 3rd lowest on record for April, based on figures since 1900,
- Mean minimum temperatures were the 2nd lowest for April, based on figures since 1950,
- Mean maximum temperatures were close to the long term average for April.

Rainfall

Rainfall averaged across the state was the 3rd lowest on record, based on figures since 1900. Prior to 2008, the last time Queensland received a lower rainfall in April was in 1951.

Most of the state received below to very much below average falls, with some places receiving their lowest rainfall on record. Some sites had their lowest total April rainfall on record.

In contrast to the area averaged rainfall across the state, the wettest overall was Bellenden Ker Top Station with 309 mm.  The highest daily rainfall was recorded at Lockhart River Airport with 146 mm on the 4th.

Brisbane received 16.8 mm of rainfall in April, well below the long term average of 92.5 mm.

Temperature

Mean minimum temperatures averaged across the state were the 2nd lowest on record for April, based on figures since 1950.  

Nearing the end of the month, dry and cool conditions over the southern interior produced some areas of  frost, along with very low overnight temperatures about the Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Central Highlands and the Maranoa and Warrego. 

As a result, Stanthorpe had the coldest night for Queensland, recording -2.2 °C on the 30th. Some sites had their lowest April temperature on record.  See a map of  daily minimum temperature anomalies for the 30th April, showing some areas up to 12 °C below the average minimum.

In contrast, the mean maximum temperatures remained close to average over most of the state during April. 

The hottest day was 39.0 °C at Boulia Airport on the 12th, while the coldest day was 15.1 °C at Applethorpe on the 9th, and on the 28th. 

Although across the state received close to average mean maximum temperatures, some sites had their coldest April day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

Brisbane's mean minimum temperature for April was 15.6 °C (+1.0 °C above the long term average), and the mean maximum temperature was 26.1 °C (equal to the long term average).
