Queensland in June 2008

A fairly uneventful month in Queensland, except in the southwest of the state where some unseasonal rainfall received across this area resulted in above to very much above average falls. Tropical parts were a little drier than average, while an offshore low at the start of June brought the bulk of rainfall for the month in only a few days. 

Temperatures (both day time and overnight) were mostly above average over much of the state, especially at night where the central interior experienced warm anomalies of up to 3 degrees.

Rainfall

An east coast low delivered good rainfall to the southeast for the first few days of the month, however totals at the end of June only just exceeded the historical average.  Rainfall in the tropics is generally insignificant at this time of year, and many places achieved equal record status with no rain at all. Some sites had their lowest total June rainfall on record.

At the other extreme, rainfall was above to very much above average over the arid southwest, but totals were only in the tens of millimetres.

From available rainfall figures, the wettest place for the month was Upper Springbrook Alert with 324 mm, and the highest daily rainfall was also recorded at Upper Springbrook Alert, with 182 mm on the 3rd.

Brisbane received 121.8 mm of rainfall in June, where the long term average is 67.8 mm.

Temperature

A warm month overall, as June temperatures (both day and night) were uniformly high across Queensland. The only exceptions were Cape York Peninsula and the southwest, where daytime temperatures were close to normal. Average derivations were generally less than 2 degrees, except for a vast region stretching northward to Bowen and westward to the border, where nights averaged up to 3 degrees warmer than the historical norm.  Extensive cloud cover contributed to these anomalies.

Some sites had their highest June mean daily maximum temperature on record.

Brisbane's mean maximum temperature was 22.9°C (+2.0°C above the long term average), while the mean minimum temperature was 12.4 °C (+1.5°C above the long term average).
