Queensland in July 2008

Summary

Rainfall across the state was generally above to very much above the long term average. Some areas, particularly the north eastern parts of the state received record high rainfall well before the end of the month. In contrast, some places in the far south west did not receive any rainfall and as a result the area was below to very much below average for July.  

Both mean maximum (day-time) and mean minimum (overnight) temperatures were generally within 1 - 2°C of the long term average.

Rainfall

The large area covering north east Queensland, roughly from about Burketown to the western Darling Downs received at least above average rainfall for the month. Further east of this area received very much above average rainfall.  Parts of the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, along with many places in the Herbert and Burdekin broke long term monthly rainfall records.  Here is a list of some sites that had their highest total July rainfall on record.
The wettest overall was Bellenden Ker Top Station in the north tropical coast with 453 mm.

Only the far southwest of the state was well below average, with some places not recording any rainfall, though much of this area receives little rainfall at this time of year.

Some sites had their highest July daily rainfall on record due to the presence of a rain band extending over the north eastern districts near the end of the month.

From available figures, the highest daily rainfall was 134 mm at Bellenden Ker Top Station, followed by 113 mm at Bulgun Creek Alert, then 107 mm at Mourilyan Mill Alert, all recorded on the16th.

Brisbane recorded 91.4 mm of rain in July, where the long term average is 56.5 mm.

Temperature

Maximum Temperatures:
Mean maximum temperatures were generally within 1 - 2°C of the long term average across the state. Combined with some decent rainfall across the northern districts, the resulting mean maximum temperatures over the area were slightly below the long term average as was the coastal area spanning from about St Lawrence to west of Texas on the southern border.  Some sites had their coldest July day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. The remainder of the state was slightly above average.

Minimum Temperatures:
Despite some rather cool nights, the mean monthly minimum temperatures across the state were within 1 - 2°C of the long term average.  Some northern districts, as well as parts of the Warrego and Maranoa, and the far south west, were slightly below the long term average. The area from about Rockhampton down to the southern border, and the adjacent inland was up to 2°C above average, while the remainder of the state was slightly above average.

Brisbane recorded a mean maximum temperature of 20.6°C (+0.2°C above the long term average) and a mean minimum temperature of 10.4°C (+0.9°C above the long term average).

Other phenomena

Snow was reported around Stanthorpe, Cabarlah, Cambooya and some areas of Toowoomba on the 28th July.
