Brisbane Metro in December 2008

Storms Continue

Summary

Although rainfall has continued over the Brisbane region, and the outer rim of Brisbane Metro (i.e. Amberley, Logan City and Redcliffe) reached it's December average, rainfall over the inner Metro area (Archerfield, Brisbane i.e. Kangaroo Point, and Brisbane Airport) was below average. Temperatures were generally above average, particularly at night.

Details

There has been an above average number of thunderstorms recorded this month (at least 8 up to the 20th). There are usually at least three thunderstorms observed at Brisbane Airport during December. For interest, there were major storms and tornadic squalls in Brisbane on 16th December 1980.

Rainfall

The wettest overall was 142.3 mm at Logan City Water Treatment, followed by 134.0 mm at Amberley AMO, followed by 122.8 mm at Redcliffe.

The driest overall was 48.8 mm at Brisbane Aero, followed by 62.6 mm at Brisbane, followed by 95.8 mm at Archerfield Airport.

The wettest single day was at Amberley AMO on the 7th with 73.4 mm, followed by 47.8 mm at Logan City Water Treatment Station on the 7th, followed by 34.2 mm at Archerfield Airport, also on the 7th.

Maximum temperature

The hottest day was 38.6 °C at Amberley AMO on the 31st, followed by 38.4 °C at Amberley AMO on the 30th, followed by 35.8 °C at Archerfield Airport on the 31st.

The warmest days on average were 31.7 °C at Amberley AMO, followed by 30.3 °C at Logan City Water Treatment Station, followed by 30.2 °C at Archerfield Airport and at Brisbane.

The coolest days on average were 28.8 °C at Brisbane Aero, followed by 29.1 °C at Redcliffe, followed by 30.2 °C at Archerfield Airport and Brisbane.

The coldest day was 25.8 °C at Brisbane Aero on the 8th, followed by 25.9 °C at Redcliffe on the 22nd, followed by 26.2 °C at both Amberley AMO and at Archerfield Airport on the 8th.

Minimum temperature

The coldest night was 12.8 °C at Amberley AMO on the 1st, followed by 13.0 °C at Amberley AMO on the 23rd, followed by 13.5 °C at Amberley AMO on the 15th.

The coolest nights on average were 18.4 °C at Amberley AMO, followed by 19.8 °C at Archerfield Airport, followed by 20.0 °C at Logan City Water Treatment Station.

The warmest nights on average were 21.0 °C at Redcliffe, followed by 20.7 °C at Brisbane, followed by 20.3 °C at Brisbane Aero.

The warmest night was 24.3 °C at Redcliffe on the 14th, followed by 23.9 °C at Redcliffe on the 26th, followed by 23.8 °C at both Brisbane and Redcliffe on the 27th.

Wind

The strongest recorded wind gust was 81 km/h at Amberley AMO on the 3rd, followed by 69 km/h at Redcliffe on the 20th, followed by 67 km/h at Redcliffe on the 19th.
