Queensland in December 2008

Below average rainfall for most of the State

Summary

Despite numerous thunderstorms across major populated centres in QLD, the majority of locations did not reach their monthly mean rainfall quotas. Exceptions included the Central Highlands and far north of the state surrounding the central Peninsula. The maximum temperatures exceeded the mean over much of the state, by between 1 and 4°C around the Wide Bay and Burnett regions and extending westwards from the Central Coast. The Gulf Country experienced below average maximum temperatures with anomalies of up to −2°C.

Details

Of particular note was the flash flooding on Bribie Island on the 7th and in Townsville on the 8th, with widespread thunderstorm activity. This was due to a combination of a ridge over the northeast tropical coast of QLD and a broad trough extending across central areas of QLD, linked to a front moving northwards along the far southern QLD coast.

The month finished with a surface trough located through southwest Queensland and extending southwards into southeast NSW. This trough generated afternoon showers and thunderstorms. A tropical low was situated along the Monsoon trough in the Gulf of Carpentaria with rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over tropical north Queensland.

Rainfall

The wettest overall was 480.2 mm at Weipa Eastern Ave, followed by 411.4 mm at Weipa Aero, followed by 411.0 mm at Port Douglas - Warner St.

The driest overall site, recording 0 mm, was The Monument Airport.

Some sites had their highest total December rainfall for at least 20 years.

Some sites had their lowest total December rainfall on record.

Some sites had their lowest total December rainfall for at least 20 years.

The wettest single day was at Orion on the 28th with 139.8 mm, followed by 136.2 mm at Weipa Eastern Ave, also on the 28th.

Maximum temperature

The hottest day was 46.3°C at Birdsville Airport on the 4th, followed by 45.1°C at Bedourie Police Station on the 26th, followed by 44.7°C at both Windorah Post Office and at Birdsville Airport also on the 26th.

The warmest days on average were 40.6°C at Bedourie Police Station, followed by 40.6°C at Julia Creek Airport, followed by 40.5°C at both Winton Airport and at Winton Post Office, followed by 40.4°C at Cloncurry Airport.

The coolest days on average were 25.7°C at Applethorpe, followed by 26.8°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade, followed by 27.5°C at Cape Moreton Lighthouse.

The coldest day was 20.6°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on the 20th, followed by 21.0°C recorded at Applethorpe on the 12th, 14th, 15th, 20th, and 21st, followed by 21.2°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade, also on the 21st.

Some sites had their highest December mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.

Minimum temperature

The coldest night was 7.0°C at Applethorpe on the 1st, followed by 7.4°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on the 1st, followed by 8.0°C at Applethorpe on the 16th.

The coolest nights on average were 14.0°C at Applethorpe, followed by 14.9°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade, followed by 15.8°C at Warwick.

The warmest nights on average were 27.4°C at Sweers Island, followed by 27.0°C at Mornington Island, followed by 26.9°C at Willis Island.

The warmest night was 31.7°C at Boulia Airport on the 29th, followed by 31.1°C at Cloncurry Airport on the 10th, at Boulia Airport on the 11th, at Ballera Gas Field on the 27th, followed by 31.0°C at Urandangi on the 5th.

Some sites had their warmest December night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Wind

The strongest recorded wind gust was 133 km/h at St George Airport on the 26th, followed by 102 km/h at Roma Airport on the 10th, followed by 94 km/h at Oakey Aero on the 30th.

Other phenomena

There were numerous severe thunderstorms across the state during December. Some locations include Charters Towers area, Taringa, Nanango, Redcliffe, Caboolture, Clifton, Jandowae, Godwin Beach, Clermont area, Goondiwindi and Hay Point. There was a 'funnel' reported 40km west of Mackay on the 8th.
