Rainfall

August was a very dry month in Queensland. While low rainfall is normal between July and September, this August has been particularly dry.  The state-averaged rainfall for August is 0.90 mm, which is the 4th lowest on record, based on figures since 1900.

Some sites had their lowest total August rainfall on record.

The highest monthly rainfall total recorded in Queensland during August was 94.6 mm at Bellenden Ker Top Station in the Barron North Coast district, followed by 45.0 mm at Corsis Alert in the Herbert North Coast district, followed by 42.0 mm at Topaz Alert in the Barron North Coast district, followed by 41.4 mm at South Johnstone Exp Station in the Herbert North Coast district.

Between the 2nd and the 4th of the month a ridge of high pressure over southern Queensland and New South Wales directed a moist southeasterly flow over the east tropical coast, producing isolated to scattered shower activity.  The highest daily rainfall total recorded during the month was 67.0 mm at Bellenden Ker Top Station on the 4th, followed by 31.0 mm at Corsis Alert on the 3rd, followed by 18.0 mm at Central Mill Alert in the Herbert North Coast district on the 3rd.

Temperature

Despite overnight temperatures being less extreme than daytime temperatures, the state-averaged monthly mean temperature anomaly of 3.07°C was the highest on record for August, based on figures since 1950.  This anomaly is 1.47°C above the previous record anomaly of 1.60°C set in 1998.  

Maximum temperature

The state-averaged monthly maximum temperature anomaly of 4.25°C was the highest on record for August, based on figures since 1950.  This anomaly is 2.98°C above the previous record anomaly of 1.27°C set in 1969. 

Above average daytime temperatures persisted over the subtropics for almost the entire month, due to a lack of cold outbreaks bringing air of Southern Ocean origin northwards, as well as a lack of moisture and consequent persistent clear skies. There have been three major episodes of extreme heat which have seen significant numbers of records broken, from the 14th to the 16th, then, after a brief moderation, from the 21st to the 25th, then on the 29th and 30th.

The bulk of the records were set between the 22nd and 24th, initially over inland areas on the 22^nd, before extending to the east coast on the 24th.  Many of the records set between the 14th and 16th were broken several more times between the 22nd and the 30th.  In total, 38 long-term weather stations in Queensland (those with 30 or more years of record) had their highest August temperature on record.

Maximum temperatures for the month as a whole were the warmest on record through much of the subtropics, reaching 6 - 7°C above normal over a large area of southern inland Queensland. Records were broken by 3°C or more in many parts of southern Queensland. The largest margin by which a record was broken at a long-term station in Queensland was Gatton, with a margin of 5.0°C, followed by Taroom (4.2°C), and Miles (4.0 °C).  

The highest daily maximum temperature recorded in Queensland during August was 38.5°C at Bedourie Police Station on the 29th, breaking the previous state August record of 38.3°C that occurred at Normanton on 26th of August 1968.  The next hottest day recorded in Queensland during the month was 38.1°C at Bedourie Police Station on the 22nd, followed by 38.0°C at Windorah Post Office on the 29th.

The northwesterlies on the 24th and 25th were strong enough to keep sea breezes out from coastal locations in the southeast and Redcliffe on the 24th and Brisbane Aero on the 25th August recorded their hottest days of 2009 so far, surpassing anything reached in January, February or March.

The warm conditions have been very persistent in many areas and numerous stations, especially in inland Queensland, have set records for the most consecutive August days above 30°C.  Windorah, which had never reached 35°C in August previously, reached that mark seven times in August 2009. 

The warmest days on average were 33.6°C at Century Mine, followed by 33.4°C at Musgrave, followed by 33.3°C at Weipa Aero.

The coolest days on average were 20.2°C at Applethorpe, followed by 21.3°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade, followed by 21.7°C at Cape Moreton Lighthouse.

The coldest day occurred on the 31st, with the lowest recorded daily maximum temperature being 15.4°C at Jimna Forestry, followed by 15.8°C at Applethorpe, followed by 15.9°C at Taroom Post Office.

Minimum temperature

For most of the month overnight minimum temperatures were less extreme than daytime maxima, as a result of persistent clear skies allowing overnight cooling. However, some exceptionally high minimum temperatures were observed as the heatwave peaked, culminating on the 25th when a record high Queensland daily minimum temperature for August of 26.5°C was set at Urandangi.  The previous record of 25.4°C occurred at Thursday Island on the 10th of August 1956.  After a brief moderation, minimum temperature anomalies again exceeded 12°C over a large area of southern inland Queensland on the 29th as very warm to hot fresh and gusty northerly winds occurred ahead of a surface trough that moved into the southwest of the state during the day.  Minimum temperature anomalies again exceeded 12°C over a large area of southern inland Queensland on the 30th.  

In total, 23 long-term weather stations in Queensland (those with 30 or more years of record) had their warmest August night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

The coldest night was −4.8°C at Mitchell Post Office on the 9th, followed by −3.5°C at Injune Post Office on the 9th, followed by −3.5°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on the 16th, followed by −3.2°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on the 1st.

The coolest nights on average were 2.7°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade, followed by 3.9°C at Applethorpe, followed by 4.1°C at Warwick.

The warmest nights on average were 23.9°C at Coconut Island, followed by 23.6°C at Horn Island, followed by 22.8°C at Willis Island.

The warmest night was 24.9°C at Coconut Island on the 7th, followed by 24.7°C at Coconut Island on the 25th, followed by 24.6°C at Horn Island on the 16th.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was 89 km/h at Double Island Point Lighthouse on the 12th, followed by 72 km/h at Oakey Aero on the 17th, followed by 70 km/h, which was recorded at a number of sites, including Green Island on the 1st and the 3rd, Cape Moreton Lighthouse on the 8th, 12th and 17th and Bundaberg Aero on the 12th.
