Monday 12 January 2009 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Rainfall in Tasmania was well down on average again during October, with many sites in the Midlands, the Derwent Valley and the north having their driest October on record. Several warm days and nights kept the temperature means above average, but did not prevent a severe frost affecting several parts of the state on the morning of the 23rd.
This Summary updates (and replaces) the previous summary issued on 4 November 2008.
An archive of previous monthly summaries for Tasmania is also available, as are summaries for other states and many other climate summaries and diagnostics.

Another dry month: Despite a promising start, with fronts bringing occasionally moderate falls to the western half of the state (Strathgordon received 53 mm in the 24 hours to 9 am on the 6th), the bulk of October was dry as high pressure systems came to dominate. A front on the 21st, and the cold stream that followed it, brought some rain to most areas, but a single event such as this was not enough to provide the usual October rain. Many parts of the Tasmania had less than half their normal October totals, and in some parts of the north less than one-fifth: numerous sites had their driest October on record (and in some cases that record extends back more than 100 years). For several others it was the driest for many decades, with totals comparable to those of 1914 or 1982.
A dry year so far: In many parts of the Tasmania, the first 10 months of 2008 have seen rain comparable to the first 10 months of 2006 — the year that for much of the state was the driest on record. Unless November and December are much wetter than usual, 2008 will be another very dry year across the state — possibly record dry in some locations. For some sites, the 2008 has seen the driest January to October on record. Although not ruling the possibility out, the current Seasonal Climate Outlook does not indicate a high chance of above-average rain in the next few months.
Many warm days: The month started off quite mild (apart from in the north), but the 3rd to the 8th was generally cool, especially the 7th in the wake of a cold front (which had brought snow to about the 700 metre level in the south and west). Temperatures then increased, reaching into the mid-20s by the 12th as another front approached. The 18th was another warm day in pre-frontal northerlies, but a cold change early on the 21st saw temperatures kept below the low teens, especially in the south and west. A high over the Tasman Sea pushed gradually warmer air across Tasmania up to the 27th, when temperatures over 30 were reported from several sites. A cold day followed, but temperatures mostly recovered to average or above for the end of the month. Overall, maximum temperatures were above average across the state, especially in the eastern half where they were up to 2 degrees above the October average. A few sites (including Launceston) had their highest October mean daily maximum temperature on record, whilst many more (including Hobart) had their highest since 1963.
Some warm nights — but some frosts: With a mix of cold fronts and high pressure systems during the month, overnight temperature were a mixed bag. Most nights were warmer than average, and for most of the state the mean for the month was above average by about half a degree. There were several mild mornings, notably the 1st to the 3rd, the 10th, the 13th, the 18th and 19th, and the 26th and the 27th; Eddystone Point and Bicheno had their warmest October night on record. Despite the generally mild conditions, dry air, clear skies and low soil moisture did result in some very low overnight temperatures. The most striking was the morning of the 23rd, where locally severe frosts were reported in several parts of the state, leading to significant crop losses. Liawenee dipped to -7.5 °C that morning, and Ross reached -5.6 °C, just below the -5.5 °C recorded on the 16th in 2006 and the lowest October temperature there in its (relatively short) 17 years of record

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on 10am Monday 12 January 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
