Exceptionally wet: Nearly all of Tasmania was wetter than usual in August, and it was the third month in a row with above-average rainfall over widespread areas. Several sites, including Bothwell, Zeehan and Westbury had their wettest August on record or their wettest August in decades. Over 500 mm fell at many sites in the west; Lake Margaret Power Station was the wettest with 620 mm (Mount Read, which probably would have received more rain even than that, was unfortunately not working for most of the month). Only a few sites in the southeast and near Swansea had less than 100 mm, and only the Tasman Peninsula was drier than usual for August. The lowest monthly total was 50.8 mm at Eaglehawk Neck.
In the west, north and south the rain came from cold fronts that regularly crossed the state, but an easterly wind regime between the 10th and 13th caused most of the rain in the east. Very heavy rain fell on the 12th as a low pressure system persisted near Flinders Island. St Marys received over 140 mm in one day, and Lake Leake and Mount Wellington had their wettest August day on record. Flooding was common throughout the month, with moderate floods on a number of days and a major flood in the South Esk river on the 13th.
Exceptionally windy: Many of the cold fronts which crossed the state during the month were accompanied by strong and gusty winds and by many measures it was the windiest August on record. Almost every site had its highest mean daily wind speed for August, and some sites had their highest mean daily wind speed for any time of the year. The wind speed at Hobart averaged 21 km/h, well above the August mean of 16 km/h and the fourth highest for any month. Devonport, which usually has no gusts to 80 km/h in August, had gusts at least this strong on seven days and Maatsuyker Island equalled its strongest wind gust on record on the 31st, when gusts reached 174 km/h. Gusts also exceeded 150 km/h on the 26th or 31st at Cape Grim, Hogan Island, Scotts Peak and Mount Wellington. Other very windy days included the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 16th and 21st.Exceptionally mild nights: Because it was often windy, cloudy or raining in August, many nights during the month were much warmer than usual, particularly between the 7th and 24th. Apart from sites in the west, almost everywhere had their highest August mean daily minimum temperature on record and averaged over the whole state August nights were their warmest on record. Mean minima for the month were about a degree above average in the west and mostly two to three degrees above average elsewhere. There was a distinct lack of cold nights: Burnie did not drop below 4°C and Launceston did not drop below 0°C; on average these occur about 5 or 6 times in August. The coldest night was −5.8°C at Mount Wellington on the 25th. Orford had its warmest August night on record to 9 am on the 7th when it didn't fall below 11.6°C, and Flinders Island's 13.5°C on the 16th was its highest August minimum temperature since 1983 and the warmest overnight temperature for the month.
Not really cold until the end: Cold temperatures at the end of the month were more than balanced by several warm days in the preceding weeks. Most areas were about half a degree warmer than usual overall, except for a few inland sites in the south which were cooler than usual by a comparable amount. Wynyard had its highest August mean daily maximum temperature on record, and all other sites on the north coast were their warmest in at least a decade. The warmest days were around the 15th and 19th; in the southeast and on the east coast temperatures peaked near 20°C on the 15th and 16th. Most sites had their coldest day on the 29th, when rain and cloud suppressed temperatures and many maxima were over five degrees cooler than usual. Hobart struggled to reach 7°C during the daylight hours, and Swansea (9.4°C) had its coldest August day since 1987. There were no significant cold outbreaks until the end of the month. On the last day, snow fell to around 300 metres in the south.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 1 September 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations
from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to
site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they
cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares
with the climate record for the site,
based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1,
low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high
in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has
fallen this time as a
percentage
of the long-term mean.
