MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - VICTORIA
The statewide average for rainfall was 53 mm in January compared with the historical average of 39 mm. The west of the state received above average totals while the east of the state was below average. Most of the rain fell between the 19th and the 22nd. The highest rainfall total recorded for the month was Casterton Showgrounds with 172 mm.

Temperatures during the day were above average in January. The statewide average maximum temperature was 28.6 deg C, which is 1.3 deg C higher than the long-term average. Nights were also warmer than usual with Victoria averaging 14.8 deg C for the minimum temperature (1.8 deg C higher than the January average). The highest temperature recorded was 42.8 deg C at Kerang on the 16th.

High pressure systems dominated during January. A cold front combining with moisture from the tropics produced significant rainfall in some areas of the state (predominately in the west) between the 19th and the 22nd.
Melbourne's average minimum temperature for January 2007 was 17.1 deg C (2.0 deg C above average). The average maximum temperature was 28.1 deg C (2.2 deg C above average). The highest temperature recorded was 40.8 deg C on the 16th. Rainfall recorded in Melbourne for January 2007 was 33 mm, the average is 47 mm.
