Monday, 2 February 2009 - Monthly Climate Summary for Victoria - Product code IDCKGC26R0
After two quite wet months, most of the State has returned to conditions that can only be described as VERY dry. Many places have received no rain during January, and most places have received less than 10 mm. With mostly clear skies, after a cool start to the month, there has been a very hot conclusion to January. Synoptic patterns during January have been characterised by enhanced westerlies, most unusual for a summer month, and this has been associated with a number of cold fronts associated with strong and hot NW winds preceding their arrival. The enhanced westerlies have prevented incursions of relatively cooler air over the continent, which has steadily heated up over the past few weeks.
The last week of January 2009 was exceptionally hot, and included a spell of three consecutive days above 43 deg C in Melbourne (28th 43.4, 29th 44.3, 30th 45.1). The 2009 heatwave brought, to older Victorians, memories of the January 1939 heatwave, when many inland centres, away from the refreshing influence of coastal sea breezes, experienced more than a week of 40 degree heat. For example, daily maximum temperatures at Wangaratta between the 6th and 14th were: 6th 39.2, 7th 42.5, 8th 44.4, 9th 40.4, 10th 45.0, 11th 45.1, 12th 41.8, 13th, 46.0 and 14th 40.9.
In Melbourne, temperatures during that period were: 6th 23.9 (sea breeze), 7th 27.3 (sea breeze), 8th 43.1, 9th 24.4 (following weak cool change), 10th 44.7 (all-time record), 11th 24.5 (following weak cool change), 12th 25.6 (sea breeze), 13th, 45.6 (a new all-time record) and 14th 24.4 (following cool change).
That heatwave was not confined to Victoria. The notable feature about the heatwave is that four of the eight capitals registered their records during the week. Firstly Canberra with 42.8 on Jan 11, then Adelaide with 46.1 on Jan12, followed by Melbourne with 45.6 on Jan 13 and Sydney with 45.3 on Jan 14.
Melbourne's most sustained heatwave occurred in January 1908 when 39.9 (15th), 42.8 (16th), 44.2 (17th), 40.0 (18th), 41.1 (19th) and 42.7 (20th) were recorded between January 15 and January 20.
In 1906, between January 3 and January 8, Mildura Post Office recorded the extraordinary sequence: 40.6 (3rd), 45.6 (4th), 47.2 (5th), 50.1 (6th), 50.7 (7th) and 44.4 (8th), but these readings were recorded in a non-standard screen.
An archive of previous monthly summaries for Victoria is also available, as are summaries for other states and many other climate summaries and diagnostics.

Jump to: Extremes Records Summaries Notes the top
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 2 February 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
