After fairly normal weather for most of April, the last few days of the month saw Victoria, and also much of southeastern Australia, hit by an icy blast (accompanied by severe winds at many localities, and a tornado close to Robinvale on the 25th). This was followed by the State's all-time record low temperature for April (−6.9 deg C at Hotham Heights) broken during the night of 28/29 April, when −8.2 deg C was recorded at Mount Hotham. The month concluded with a thick layer of snow covering the ranges. Rainfall totals for April were mostly close to normal, although much of this precipitation occurred during the last few days. In Melbourne, the temperature failed to reach 15 deg C on the four consecutive days between 26 April and 29 April, the first time since April 1949that this has happened. the overnight minimum temperature at Melbourne on the 30th was 2.9 deg C, the lowest April reading since 1957.
An archive of previous monthly summaries for Victoria is also available, as are summaries for other states and many other climate summaries and diagnostics.

The month began with a high over the South Tasman Sea directing warm northeasterlies across the State. Following this, there was the passage of a series of weak fronts, which was then followed by a new high moving across Victoria; this second high then intensified as it advanced over the Tasman Sea region. About mid-month the synoptic patterns began to alter, with increasing strength being shown in the westerly flow to the south of the continent. This period of westerly flow then temporarily came to an abrupt halt, as a new high developed and intensified over Tasmania. This high then drifted eastwards towards New Zealand, thereby allowing a major low pressure trough to amplify over southeastern Australia. It was this trough that brought the low temperatures to much of southeastern Australia and snowfalls to the ranges down to low levels.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 1 May 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
