New South Wales in spring 2006
Very dry and warm across NSW

Summary

  • South and west of NSW severely affected by El Niño induced drought in spring
  • 6th driest spring on record in the Murray Darling basin (records since 1900)
  • 2nd warmest spring on record for NSW
  • Much of the south of the state experienced highest spring maximum temperatures on record
  • Very high diurnal temperature ranges, 2nd highest on record, with hot days and cold nights across the dry south of the state

Rainfall

It was a very dry spring across most of the state in 2006. Only the north eastern corner of NSW was spared from the El Niño induced drought through spring. Coastal areas of the Hunter and parts of the Northern Rivers were the only areas to receive above average spring rainfall. In contrast large tracts of the south and west of the state recorded very much below average spring rainfall totals. Parts of the far northwest, southwest and central/southern slopes of the Great Divide received lowest on record spring rainfall.

The dry spring in NSW was a result of the 2006 El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean. This event in combination with colder than average ocean temperatures to the northwest of Australia has resulted in very much below average rainfall across most of the eastern half of Australia in 2006.

NSW received only 64.7 mm of rain as a statewide average during spring. This is well down on the historical spring average1 for the state which is 130.5 mm. The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) was severely affected by the El Niño induced drought with an average of only 48.4 mm recorded across the basin during spring. The average spring rainfall for the basin is 120.2 mm. This was the sixth driest spring on record in the MDB.

Temperature

This was the second warmest spring on record for maximum temperatures, the warmest spring was the El Niño drought year of 2002. Maximum temperatures were very much above average across the entire state apart from the far northeastern corner where average maximum temperatures prevailed. The southern half of the state recorded the highest spring maximum temperatures on record. The statewide maximum temperature was 2.85ºC above the historical average1 of 24.3ºC. The highest temperature anomalies occurred in the central and southern slopes of the Great Divide and into the Riverina where maximum temperatures were more than 4ºC above average.

Spring minimum temperatures were above average in the north and west of the state and below average near the Victorian border in the southeast of the state. Highest on record minimum temperatures were experienced in the far northwest of the state. The statewide minimum temperature for spring was 0.78ºC above the historical average of 10.3ºC.

Statewide mean temperatures were also the second warmest on record behind the 2002 El Niño drought. The statewide mean temperatures were 1.81ºC above the historical average of 17.3ºC. Highest on record spring mean temperatures were recorded in the Southern Tablelands and Southwest Slopes and also in the far west of the state.

A strong feature of this spring was the large diurnal temperature range experienced across the state. The average diurnal temperature range for the state in spring is 13.9ºC, this spring the state experienced a range 2.1ºC higher, the second highest on record behind 1957. As the drought continued, low soil and atmospheric moisture contents enabled the land surface to heat rapidly during the day and then cool quickly at night as heat radiated easily through clear dry night skies.

Other phenomena

An unseasonably late strong cold outbreak with associated snowfalls affected the state on the 15 and 16 November. Snowfalls were reported across all areas of the ranges above 1000 m and even briefly pushed north into Queensland. Snow falls in the northern tablelands are rare in November with Armidale recording November snow for the first time in 41 years. Many new lowest monthly maximum and minimum temperature records were set during this event.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Friday 1 December 2006. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.

The Rank indicates about where rainfall this time ranks in the climate record for the site.
