New South Wales in summer 2006-07
Dry and warm summer with a stormy end

Summary

  • Driest summer for 22 years, however, the end of the El Niño brings some relief.

Rainfall

The statewide average for summer in NSW was 112.6 mm, which is well below the historical average1 of 169 mm. It was the driest summer since 1984/85, with vast areas of the central and northeast of the state receiving below average falls. Eastern parts of the northern border areas were particularly dry, with some areas receiving very much below average rainfall. In contrast, the far west of the state recorded average rainfall, with large parts receiving above average rainfall.

The below average rainfall for summer was largely attributed to the El Niño induced drought, which affected rainfall across much of eastern Australia during the last year. February brought an end to the current El Niño event and a return to a more normal climate pattern. Good rains fell across eastern Australia during the second half of summer to provide some much needed relief from the drought conditions.

The Murray Darling Basin recorded 112.6 mm of rain, which was also well below the average of 144.5 mm.

Some sites had their lowest total summer rainfall on record.

Temperature

Most parts of NSW experienced above average maximum temperatures during summer, with a statewide average of 32.6 °C, 1.4 degrees above the historical average of 31.2 °C. It was the 9th warmest summer on record, and the 5th consecutive summer with above average maximum temperatures. Parts of the western slopes and central ranges recorded very much above average conditions. The far northeast of NSW was the only area to experience below average maximum temperatures.

Average minimum temperatures were also above average through most parts of the state. The statewide average was 18.2 °C, which is 1.1 °C above the historical average of 17.1 °C. Coastal areas north from the Hunter and the Northern Tablelands were the only parts of the State to record below average temperatures.

Other Phenomena

Thunderstorm activity has generally been above average during summer, and particularly in the month of February. Persistent inland troughs, moist easterly airflow and cool air aloft was the main reason for the increased thunderstorm events.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 noon on Thursday, 1st March 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
