Rainfall

Following the demise of the 2006/07 El Niño, Autumn 2007 brought a return to close to average rainfall for most of New South Wales, and it was the wettest Autumn since 2000. Most of the state recorded average or above average rainfall, with the exception of the far southeast, far northeast, and the coastal strip north of about Port Macquarie. Areas in the northwest of the state around Tibooburra recorded very much above average rainfall, due mostly to two significant rainfall events during late April.

The Autumn statewide average rainfall was 129.8 mm, which is just below the the historical average1 of 151.4 mm.

The Murray Darling Basin also recorded slightly below average rainfall, with 109.6 mm recorded for Autumn 2007, in comparison to the historical average of 128.7 mm

Some sites had their lowest total autumn rainfall on record.

Temperature

Mean maximum temperatures for Autumn 2007 in New South Wales were above average throughout the state. Areas along the eastern half of the northern border, and also in the far southeast experienced their highest mean maximum temperatures on record for Autumn. Only a small area around the Sydney Metropolitan area recorded average mean maximum temperatures for Autumn.

The statewide mean maximum temperatures for Autumn was 25.7°C, which is 1.7°C above the historical average of 24.0°C, and the third hottest year on record (2005 recorded the hottest Autumn mean maximum temperatures with 26.1°C).

Nighttime temperatures were also above average through most of the state for Autumn. Areas around Cobar and Tibooburra recorded the highest mean minimum temperatures on record. Several pockets in inland New South Wales recorded mean minimum temperatures 2−3°C above average for this time of year. A small coastal strip from Newcastle to Port Macquarie and a small area near Inverell were the only part of the state to record temperatures below average (0 to 1°C below). The statewide average for mean minimum temperatures for Autumn was 12.6°C, which is 1.3°C above the historical average of 11.3°C and the fourth warmest on record (behind 1989, 1974 and 1990).

The above average minimum and maximum temperatures through the state contributed to the mean temperature for Autumn (the average of the maximum and minimum temperature) being the highest on record (previous record set in 1986). The statewide average was 19.1°C, which is 1.5°C above the historical average of 17.6°C.

The Murray Darling Basin also experienced similar record warm temperatures for Autumn. The Autumn 2007 mean temperature (the average of the maximum and minimum temperature) of 19.6°C, exceeded the previous record set back in 1986 by 0.5°C. This was 1.7°C above the historical average. The mean maximum temperature of 26.5°C, and the mean minimum temperature of 12.9°C, were the second and third highest respectively on record.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 June 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
