Rainfall

There was a distinct east/west distribution of rainfall across the state in winter 2007. Despite promising rainfall in autumn, dry conditions returned to the west, with below to very much below average rainfall recorded west of the divide. However, much of the coast and adjacent ranges recorded average to above average rainfall, with very much above average rainfall recorded in the Hunter.

Much of the rainfall along the coast can be attributed to several heavy rainfall events that occurred during winter. Five east coast low events brought significant rainfall to coastal districts mid June, whilst an active trough brought heavy rainfall to the northeast in mid-late August. Higher than average pressure over inland Australia and a distinct lack of moisture, brought about by cooler than average Indian Ocean temperatures, were factors contributing to the dry conditions in the west.

The statewide average rainfall for winter 2007 was 111.1  mm, which is slightly lower than the historical average1 of 115.1  mm. The Murray Darling Basin recorded an average of 83.3  mm, compared to the historical average of 110.2  mm.

Temperature

Individual months of winter saw a mixed bag of temperatures, with siginificantly cold temperatures in June, average temperatures in July and very warm temperatures in August. However, despite this variation, overall winter temperatures were close to average over much of the state.

The statewide average maximum temperature for winter 2007 was 16.5°C, which is 0.4°C above the historical average1 of 16.1°C. The statewide average minimum temperature was 4.3°C, which is equal to the historical average of 4.3°C.

Some sites had their highest winter temperature on record.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 4 September 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a
ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest)
then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would
be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals
(highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World
Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which
vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for
temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
