New South Wales in autumn 2008
Yet another dry autumn for NSW and the Murray Darling Basin

Summary

  • 4th driest autumn on record for the Murray Darling Basin
  • 10th driest autumn on record for NSW
  • 8th consecutive autumn with above average temperatures
  • 6th coolest autumn on record for statewide average minimum temperatures

Rainfall

Dry conditions prevailed across NSW during autumn, under the influence of sustained high pressure systems that dominated the state's weather throughout the season. Below to very much below average rainfall was recorded throughout the state, with the exception of some parts of the Mid North Coast, which recorded above average rainfall (a result of a low pressure system that brought heavy rainfall and flooding to the area in late April).

The statewide average rainfall for autumn was 59.2 mm which was well below the historical average of 151.4 mm. This is the 10th driest autumn on record for NSW (current record is 35.1 mm set in 1902) and the 8th consecutive autumn with below average rainfall. It is also the driest autumn since 2005 (45.4 mm).

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) also experienced a dry autumn, with a basin-wide average of 40.0 mm, well below the historical average of 128.7 mm. This is the 4th driest autumn on record for the MDB (current record is 28.1 mm set in 1902) and the 8th consecutive autumn with below average rainfall. It is also the driest autumn since 2005 for the MDB (34.3 mm).

Some sites had their lowest total autumn rainfall on record.

See a map of total rainfall. See a map of rainfall deciles.

Temperature

Warm days and cool nights prevailed during autumn. Persistent high pressure systems over the state throughout the season resulted in clear skies, light winds and dry conditions, producing a strong diurnal temperature range.

There was a distinct northeast/southwest division in maximum temperatures during autumn, with average to below average maximum temperatures recorded across much of the northeastern half of the state, and above to very much above average maximum temperatures recorded across the southwestern half. However, the overall net affect on average maximum temperatures was a warming. The statewide average maximum temperature for autumn was 24.6°C, which is 0.6°C above the historical average1 of 24.0°C. This is the 8th consecutive autumn with above average maximum temperatures.

With dry, clear nights across the state during autumn, minimum temperatures were below to very much below average, with parts of the far northern inland, far northeast and inland parts of the central coast recoding their lowest minimum temperatures on record. The statewide average minimum temperature for autumn was 10.0°C, which is 1.3°C below the historical average of 11.3°C. This is the 6th coolest autumn on record for statewide average minimum temperatures (records since 1950).

The large variation between day-time and night-time temperatures in autumn resulted in a significant diurnal temperature range, with a statewide average diurnal temperature (difference between the mean minimum and mean maximum temperature) range of 14.6°C, which is 1.9°C above the historical average of 12.7°C. This is the 4th highest diurnal temperature range on record for autumn.

Some sites had their highest autumn temperature on record.

Some sites had their coldest autumn day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

Some sites had their lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record.

See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

Some sites had their lowest autumn temperature on record.

Some sites had their lowest autumn mean daily minimum temperature on record.

Other phenomena

The heatwave that affected much of southern Australia during the first half of March, also impacted parts of the far southwest of NSW. Records broken for the number of consecutive days above 35°C occurred at Broken Hill Airport and Ivanhoe Post Office.

A low pressure system that developed off the North Coast on the 24th April brought heavy rainfall to parts of the Mid North Coast and Lower Hunter. Moderate flooding was reported in severel coastal rivers.

A vigorous cold front that moved through the state on the 26th/27th April brought very cold temperatures to much of NSW, and snow to the Snowy Mountains high ground. Light snowfalls were also reported in Bathurst, Katoomba, Oberon and Orange.

A high pressure system located to the south of Tasmania on the 23rd and 24th of May, brought very cool, dry air to Alpine regions, with record low temperatures recorded at Thredbo Village, Perisher Ski Centre and Charlotte Pass.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 2 June 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
