Rainfall
Following on from a very dry autumn, NSW experienced close to average rainfall during winter. The statewide average rainfall was 95.8 mm, which is slightly lower than the historical winter average1 of 115.1 mm. However, it should be noted that despite much of northern and coastal NSW recording close to average winter rainfall, dry conditions continued in the southern border regions of the state, with below average rainfall recorded during winter.
The Murray Darling Basin also recorded below average rainfall, with a basin-wide average of 91.8 mm, compared to the historical average of 110.2 mm.
Higher than average pressure over Australia and a generally dry air mass were factors contributing to the drier conditions during winter, particularly in the south.
Some sites had their lowest total winter rainfall on record.

Temperature
NSW experienced a mixed bag of temperatures during winter, with unseasonably warm temperatures in June, average temperatures in July and very cool temperatures in August. However, because of this variation, overall winter temperatures were close to average over much of the state.
The statewide average maximum temperature for winter 2008 was 16.6°C, which is 0.5°C above the historical average1 of 16.1°C. This is the 10th consecutive winter with above average statewide maximum temperatures.
Overnight (minimum) temperatures were close to average thoughout. The statewide average minimum temperature was 4.5°C, which is slightly greater than the historical average of 4.3°C.
Some sites had their coldest winter day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 1 September 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
