Summary

  • 8th warmest spring on record for statewide average minimum temperatures

Rainfall

Following average rainfall for winter, NSW experienced above average rainfall for spring 2008. The overall statewide average for spring 2008 was 149.7 mm, which is above the historical average of 130.5 mm, with half the rainfall totals falling during November.

The northeastern part of the state experienced above average to very much above average rainfall due to several low pressure systems and troughs that occurred during September and November. Despite above average rainfall for the southern part of the state for November, areas of the far southwest, southeast and central NSW experienced below average rainfall. The rest of the southern, central and western parts of the state reported average rainfall for the season.

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin-wide average of 129.6 mm, which is higher than the historical average of 120.2 mm. This is following from below average rainfall during winter 2008 for the MDB.

Some sites had their highest total spring rainfall on record.

Some sites had their lowest total spring rainfall on record.

See a map of total rainfall. See a map of rainfall deciles.

Temperature

NSW experienced its 8th and 9th warmest spring for minimum and maximum statewide average temperatures respectively.

Temperature in spring was changable with a warm October and cold snaps occuring in November. Snow falls were reported in Orange, Oberon and Katoomba on the 23rd November. Central and southern parts of NSW experienced very much above average maximum temperatures with the rest of the state experiencing average to above average maximum temperatures for spring. The overall state wide average maximum temperature was 25.2ºC, which is 1.3ºC above the historical average of 24.3ºC, making it the 9th warmest spring on record for maximum temperatures and the 9th consecutive spring with above average maximum temperatures.

Spring minimum temperatures for the northwestern, central and far northeastern parts of the state were very much above average with the majority of the state recording above averages minimums. The overall NSW minimum temperature was 11.2ºC, which is 0.9ºC above the historical average of 10.3ºC, making it the 8th warmest spring on record and 5th consecutive spring with above average minimums on record.

See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

Some sites had their warmest spring night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Some sites had their highest spring mean daily minimum temperature on record.

See a map of mean minimum temperatures. See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.

Other phenomena

A cold southwesterly change which occurred on the 23rd November caused light snowfalls in Orange, Oberon and Katoomba.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 1 December 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.

1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation

Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
