Warm Summer for NSW

 

Summary

• Above average maximum and minimum temperatures for the state.
• Close to average rainfall for most of NSW

Rainfall

The NSW statewide average rainfall for summer 2008−09 is 146 mm which is close to the historical average of 169 mm. Across most of NSW rainfall distribution was close to average over the summer. However, patches in the northern part of the state experienced above average rainfall with an area around Bourke and Walget recording well above average rainfall for the season. The far southeastern part of NSW and small areas in the southern half of NSW as well as two areas in the northeastern and northwest recorded below average rainfall. Although the overall summer rainfall was close to average for most of the state, the story was quite different for individual months. December was above average for the south and south west, January was below average for southwest and coastal inland NSW. February was above average for the vast majority of the northern half of NSW (with exceptionally high rainfall recorded for the Mid North Coast), and below average for far western and southwest NSW. The resulting summer rainfall decile map (see below) is patchy and reflects the averaging out of the rainfall at the seasonal time scale.

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) recorded a basin wide seasonal rainfall average of 124 mm, which is below the historical average of 144 mm.

Temperature

The average maximum temperature for the state was 32.3°C, which is 1.1°C above average of 31.2°C. All of NSW experienced above average daytime temperatures during summer with a large area stretching from the southwestern border of NSW, through inland NSW including most of the ACT, to the Central Coast as well as an area in the northwest of NSW, being up to 2°C above average. The Illawarra and northern NSW were close to average. December average maximum temperatures were well below average by as much as 3°C in an area on the southern border. January and February temperatures were above average by approximately 1°C. Although extreme events have occurred during the course of summer (the most notable being the heatwave that occured at the end of January/early February, and cold air associated with the passage of a front on the 29th December) these events averaged out over the course of the season and thus do not appear as strong a signal as would be expected. This is partly due to the below average maximum temperature anomalies during December which coincidentally were present in the southern parts of NSW.

The average minimum temperature for NSW was 17.8°C which is 0.7°C above the historical average of 17.1°C. Two large areas within the southern inland and the northwestern corner of NSW were above average by up to 2°C. The reamainder of the state was within a degree of the average.

Other phenomena

A cold front towards the end of December caused major storm activity with hail reported at various locations. A tornado was also reported in Cooma on the 23rd December associated with the storm activity. A slow moving high pressure system in the Tasman produced a heatwave over much of South Eastern Autralia including the southern part of NSW towards the end of January which continued into early February. Parts of the Mid North Coast, including Maitland and Bellingen experienced flooding in February due to the above average rainfall that fell in the area. Bourke experienced its wettest day on record, 198 mm on 14th February. This caused flooding of all streets and closed off roads with over 20 houses flooded during this event.
