Autumn climate summary for Queensland 2007

Summary

Queensland has recorded its warmest autumn on record with many places setting new temperature records.

Rainfall

Autumn rainfall totals were below average over Central and Southeast Queensland, the Central West and the Maranoa and Warrego. Rainfall associated with a frontal system that brought significant rainfall to New  South Wales and Victoria during May led to above average totals in parts of the Channel Country near the southern border. Elsewhere totals were mixed, with rainfall near average over much of the west and north, apart from a few pockets of both above and below average totals. 

A number of places in Central and Southeast Queensland recorded their lowest autumn rainfall on record, including Alderley with 73 mm (average 311 mm, 105 years of record), Collinsville with 15 mm (average 170 mm, 68 years of record) and Gladstone with 37.2 mm (average 191 mm, 49 years of record).  Refer below to sites with the lowest total autumn rainfall on record.

Brisbane recorded a total of 62.8 mm, little more than a fifth of the long-term average of 305 mm for autumn.

Temperature

Both daytime maximum and overnight minimum temperatures were above average across the state during autumn, with the exception being some small areas with slighter cooler than average temperatures near the Gulf and on Cape York Peninsula.

Taking the state as a whole, and based on figures since 1950, Queensland had its warmest autumn on record. The average day-time maximum temperature across the state was 2.1 degrees warmer than the long-term average and the highest on record, while the minimum temperatures were 1.3 degrees warmer and the 4^th warmest on record.

The extreme temperatures led to new records in many places in both hottest daily temperatures and overall monthly means.  Refer below for a full list of new autumn temperature records.

Some of the places which recorded new monthly mean maximum temperatures for autumn include Georgetown with 34.6°C (average 32°C, previous record 34.3°C, 113 years of record), Mitchell with 30.7°C (average 27.1°C, previous record 29.7°C, 86 years of record) and Charleville with 30.6°C (average 27.7°C, previous record 29.9°C, 65 years of record).

Brisbane’s average maximum temperature was about 2.5 degrees warmer than average for autumn while the minimum was about 1.5 degrees warmer. For more details see the summary table below.
