Monday, 1 December 2008 - Seasonal Climate Summary for Queensland - Product code IDCKGC14L0
Spring 2008 was an encouraging period for Queensland, with good rainfall
relieving stress from the larger southeast Queensland catchments and
significantly suppressing a potentially devastating bush fire season.
Nevertheless, there were three distinct regions where rainfall did not
reach its long-term seasonal average, namely the Burnett, the west
coast of Cape York and a small region surrounding Mackay, including a
portion of the Central Highlands.
Temperatures overall were still warmer than average, allowing increased
evaporation to offset the positive effects of rain, but a strong start
to the thunderstorm season maintained good levels of ground moisture.
An archive of previous seasonal summaries for Queensland is also available, as are summaries for other states and many other climate summaries and diagnostics.

Although the bulk of the state received greater than its median spring rainfall, few places stood out as exceptionally wet, the majority staying in the middle deciles or slightly above. The biggest anomalies were in the southeast; where a major outbreak of severe thunderstorms in the final two weeks made a significant contribution; and over the inland tropics between Townsville and Cairns, again due to heavy storm falls in late November. During this period, the Central Coast district and adjacent highlands received comparatively little rain, leading to an overall deficit for the season. Likewise, the Burnett region fared poorly, and to a lesser extent western Cape York Peninsula, where genuine monsoonal storms did not arrive until the final week.
From available figures, the highest spring rainfall was 1267 mm at Bellenden Ker Top Stn, then 706 mm at Upper Springbrook Alert. Some sites had their highest total spring rainfall on record.
The highest daily rainfall was 243 mm at Tallegalla Alert, then 216 mm at Rosewood AL-B, followed by 208 mm at Rosewood Alert, all recorded at 9am on 20 Nov. Some sites had their highest spring daily rainfall on record.

Brisbane recorded 437.4 mm for spring, where the long term average is 216.6 mm.
Some sites in the north tropical and central coast had their highest spring temperature on record. Surat had its coldest spring day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. A few places in the far north had their highest spring mean daily maximum temperature on record.
See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.Minimum temperatures followed a similar trend, though more pronounced due to the heat-trapping effect of cloud. There was an anomaly of up to three degrees above average over the south west, while the remainder of the state recorded between one and two degrees above the overnight median.
A few sites across the state had their warmest spring night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record. Some sites also had their highest spring mean daily minimum temperature on record.| Hottest day Highest temperature |

Jump to: Extremes Records Summaries Notes the top
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 1 December 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from all
available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they
cannot then be calculated reliably. *In this case, normals from a
nearby suitable site may be included to calculate statistics
(these are marked with an *).
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
