A Near Normal Summer for Adelaide

Summary

  • Overall, the summer of 2007/08 in metropolitan Adelaide was near normal.
  • A heatwave (5 consecutive days in excess of 35°C) occurred in late December to early January.
  • Significant rain fell in the 24 hours to 9am on the 22nd December 2007, 30.2 mm.

Rainfall

Summer rainfall across the metropolitan area was generally below average. The South Australian Regional Office, Adelaide (Kent Town), recorded 49.6 mm, while the normal rainfall for summer for Kent Town is 61.5 mm. Last year 51.6 mm was recorded for summer.

The lowest summer rainfall total on record for the South Australian Regional Office, Kent Town, is 11.6 mm in 1984. The highest summer rainfall total at Kent Town is 130.4 mm in 1992.

The wettest location in the Adelaide metropolitan area during the summer of 2007/08 was in the eastern suburb of Burnside with 80.4 mm.

Temperature

The mean maximum temperature, recorded at the South Australian Regional Office (Kent Town), for summer 2007/08 was 29.2°C, which is 0.9°C above the average summer mean maximum of 28.3°C. The mean maximum for summer last year was 30.3°C.

The hottest day during summer was recorded at Parafield Airport and Edinburgh RAAF with 42.7°C both on the 31st December 2007. Noarlunga recorded the coolest day during summer with 18.0°C on the 23rd December 2007.

Parafield Airport recorded the warmest days on average with 30.0°C with the coolest days on average of 27.3°C at Noarlunga.

The mean minimum temperature for summer 2007/08 was 16.8°C at the South Australian Regional Office (Kent Town), which is only 0.2°C above the average summer mean minimum of 16.6°C. Last summer the mean minimum was 17.6°C.

The coldest night during summer was recorded at Edinburgh RAAF with 8.7°C on the 10th December 2007. Noarlunga recorded the warmest night during summer with 27.7°C on the 19th February 2008.

The coolest nights on average, 15.7°C, were recorded at Parafield Airport whilst the warmest nights on average were at the Adelaide (Kent Town) site of 16.8°C
