South Australia in summer 2007−08
A warmer than average summer despite a cool finish.

Summary

• Rainfall in South Australia was generally below average apart from being slightly above average in the west. This is in contrast to the well above average rainfall in the north of Australia and in the eastern states from an ongoing La Nina event.
• Temperatures were above generally above average for Summer as a whole, despite a cool finish in February.

Rainfall

Summer rainfall over South Australia was mostly below average apart from the west of the state were it was slightly above average. This is in contrast to the well above average rainfall experienced in the north of Australia, and the eastern states and much of Western Australia. This is likely due to a persistently stronger than usual ridge of high pressure to the south of Australia, and Indian Ocean seas temperatures being cooler than normal for a La Nina event.
The Pastoral Districts reported totals that were generally above average in Northwest pastoral district but generally below average elsewhere.
In the Agricultural areas rainfall was above average in the Western Agricultural districts but below average elsewhere.
Rainfall totals in the Pastoral areas were generally 20 to 40 mm, with higher totals to 60 mm in the Northwest. Moonaree recorded 94 mm, the highest in the Pastoral districts.
Totals in the Agricultural areas were generally between 30 mm and 50 mm.
The highest rainfall for this Summer was 96 mm at Curramulka where the average Summer sees totals of 51 mm.

Temperatures

Maximum Temperatures.

Mean maximum temperatures over the pastoral districts of the state were generally up to 1°C warmer than normal and ranged from 32.0°C at both Yunta and Gluepot in the Northeast district to 37.6°C at Marree Comparison in the Far North district.
The highest recorded maximum temperature for this Summer was on the 10th January of 45.4°C at Port Augusta Aerodrome.
Mean maximum temperatures in the Agricultural districts ranged from 21.3°C at Cape Willoughby on Kangaroo Island to 33.6°C at Hawker in the Upper North district.

Minimum Temperatures.

Mean minimum temperatures over the whole state were generally up to 1°C above average.
In the pastoral districts they ranged from 14.7°C at Gluepot in the Northeast Pastoral district to 23.7°C at Moomba Airport in the Far North district. The lowest recorded minimum temperature for Spring 2007 in the pastoral areas was 6.3°C recorded at Gluepot on 29th February. The warmest recorded minimum temperature was 31.0°C at Arkaroola on the 11th January.
Over the agricultural districts mean minimum temperatures were also generally up to 1°C above average ranging from 10.5°C at Naracoorte Aerodrome in the Lower South East district to 18.7°C at Port Augusta in the Western Agricultural district.
The lowest recorded minimum temperature for Summer was 1.6°C at Keith on 29th February.
