Details

Ouyen, in the Mallee region, experienced the second highest Autumn rainfall since the station opened in 1911.  The remainder of the state experienced average rainfalls, although a wide coastal band that stretched from the Otways through Melbourne and east as far as Yarram received below average rainfalls. A smaller area that extended east from the Snowy River to coast also received less than average rainfall, with Point Hicks receiving its lowest total Autumn rainfall since the station opened in 1962.  During May, much of Victoria experienced a typical autumn break, with pre-frontal rain-bearing northwest cloud bands followed by strong westerly winds. The light snow that fell at Mount Hotham in late March was followed by significant falls in late May.

Rainfall

Victoria encountered an extreme variance in Autumn rainfall totals with the wettest overall being 599.8 mm at Mount Buller while Geelong Airport at 62.6 mm was the driest overall. Mount Buller also experienced this season’s wettest single day when 115.4 mm fell on 21 March.

Notes

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Tuesday 5 June 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Normals are long-term means based on observations from the years 1961 to 1990. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record in that time, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of "normal" rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
