Queensland in 2008

Wet start and finish to the year

Summary

Tropical Cyclone Helen contributed to the major rain event in January and the monsoon to that in February, both causing significant flooding in the eastern parts of QLD. November saw considerable damage in the southeast corner with a barrage of severe thunderstorms. The beginning of the year saw the peak of a La Nina event, and there were early signs of a new La Nina developing in the latter part of the year.
 
The La Nina was partly responsible for a cooler year in QLD with average to below average maximum temperatures for most of the state, except for the far west. With respect to rainfall, average to below average rainfall persisted in the southeast districts, worsening in the far west. Above average rainfall conditions prevailed in the central and northern districts. Overall the rainfall deficiencies have eased over much of QLD, but small patches persist in western QLD.

Rainfall

The state average rainfall was 657.12 mm, ranked 70 of 109 years based on median rainfall.

The wettest overall was 8486.0 mm at Bellenden Ker Top Stn, followed by 4813.0 mm at Bellenden Ker Bottom Stn, and 4713.4 mm at Tree House Creek (up until the end of November#) .

The driest overall was 84.2 mm at Monkira, followed by 84.8 mm at The Monument Airport.

Some sites had their highest total rainfall on record.

Some sites had their highest total rainfall for at least 20 years.

Some sites had their lowest total rainfall for at least 20 years.

The wettest single day was at East Mackay on 15 Feb with 625.0 mm recorded, followed by 532.0 mm at Pleystowe Sugar Mill on 15 Feb, followed by 532.0 mm at Te Kowai Exp Stn on 15 Feb.

Some sites had their highest daily rainfall on record.

Temperature

The state average mean temperature anomaly was +0.17°C, ranked 69 of 99 years based on the median temperature.

Maximum temperature

The state average maximum temperature anomaly was +0.18°C, ranked 52 of 99 years based on the median maximum temperature.

The hottest day was 46.3°C at Birdsville Airport on 4 Dec, followed by 45.1°C at Bedourie Police Station on 26 Dec, followed by 44.7°C at both Windorah Post Office on 4 Dec, and at Birdsville Airport on 26 Dec.

The warmest days on average were 34.5°C at Camooweal Township, followed by 34.2°C at Julia Creek Airport, followed by 34.0°C at Cloncurry Airport.

The coolest days on average were 20.7°C at Applethorpe, followed by 21.4°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade, followed by 22.4°C at Toowoomba Airport.

The coldest day was 5.6°C at Applethorpe on 28 Jul, followed by 6.7°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on 28 Jul, followed by 7.5°C at Applethorpe on 9 Jul.

Some sites had their highest temperature on record.

Some sites had their lowest mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.

Minimum temperature

The state average minimum temperature anomaly was +0.16°C, ranked 72 of 99 years based on the median minimum temperature.

The coldest night was −6.5°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on 10 Aug, followed by −6.2°C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on 9 and 14 Aug, followed by −5.6°C at Warwick on 10 Aug.

The coolest nights on average were 8.6°C at both Applethorpe and at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade, followed by 10.0°C at Warwick, followed by 10.8°C at Oakey Aero.

The warmest nights on average were 25.1°C at Coconut Island, followed by 24.8°C at Horn Island, followed by 24.5°C at Willis Island.

The warmest night was 32.8°C at Birdsville Airport on 16 Jan, followed by 32.6°C at Bedourie Police Station on 28 Nov, followed by 31.7°C at both Boulia Airport on 23 Feb, and at Boulia Airport on 29 Dec.

Some sites had their warmest night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Some sites had their lowest mean daily minimum temperature for at least 20 years.

Wind

The strongest recorded wind gust was 133 km/h at St George Airport on 26 Dec, followed by 106 km/h at Rundle Island on 23 Apr, followed by 104 km/h at Double Island Point Lighthouse on 12 Feb.

Annual summary of events

January - Ex-Tropical Cyclone Helen brought flooding rains to large areas of the state.
February - The monsoon brought wet and cool conditions to much of the state during February. 
March - Cooler temperatures occurred near the end of the month, mainly due to a dry southwesterly airflow.
April - Averaged over the state, rainfall was the 3rd lowest on record based on figures since 1900.
May - Mixed rainfall occurred across the state after the development of an east coast low near the end of the month.
June - The southwest received some unseasonal rainfall, above to very much above average falls.
July - Rainfall across the state was generally above to very much above the long term average
August - It was cool and dry in Queensland.
September - This was a wet and warm month.
October - Rainfall across most of the state was generally close to average.
November - There was regional variation with severe thunderstorms barraging the southeast corner.
December - Below average rainfall returned to the state.
