Change what you see on the map

View Location Markers and background map layers

A panel at the bottom of the map allows you to select and display a number of useful background layers and location markers on the map.

You can choose to switch on any number of these overlays.

Tip: These map layers and markers can assist you to find your exact location; if for instance, the Locate search did not return the correct place.

The three location makers that can be displayed in MetEye are:

  1. The Forecast location markers (red)
  2. The Search marker (magenta/pink)
  3. The Saved location markers (purple)

The Forecast Location markers include all locations where an official forecast is issued by the Bureau, so are for a particular set of locations and are the same for everyone using MetEye.

The Search and Saved location markers are generated for you individually, as you use MetEye.

  1. The Forecast location markers (red)

    The Forecast locations are clickable point markers which show you the locations where Bureau of Meteorology Forecasters provide an official (fully checked) 7-day forecast.

    • If you are zoomed out, multiple forecast locations may be grouped under one marker symbol

      Clicking on this '+' marker brings up a list of available locations.

    • You can click on one of these locations to see a tabular forecast for that spot.
  2. The Search marker (magenta/pink)

    Search markers option.

    The location search markers are clickable points which display the location of the previous location search. Hovering a mouse over these makers displays the location name that corresponds to the search.

    You can click on the Search marker to view the 7-day tabular forecast at any time.

    Note: Only one Search Location marker is displayed on the map at any given time. If you choose to save a given search location on the map then a different coloured marker will be displayed.

  3. The Saved Location markers (purple)

    The saved location markers are clickable point markers which allow you to view numerous saved locations of interest. Hovering a mouse over these makers either displays a location name. or a latitude/longitude value associated with that position.

    Note: Only one Search Location marker is displayed on the map at any given time. If you choose to save a given search location on the map then a different coloured marker will be displayed.


Saving and Deleting Saved Location makers

Note: Cookies are small text files stored on your computer by your web browser. MetEye cookies store your 'saved location markers'. Your browser may be set to reject all cookies and so saving the MetEye location makers will not be possible unless you choose to allow cookies.

If cookies are enabled in your web browser, then clicking on the Save Location button, in the 7-day tabular forecast, places a Saved Location marker (purple) on the map at the selected point.

You can click on a saved marker to view the 7-day tabular forecast at any time. Once saved, the button will switch to say Forget Location within the 7-day tabular forecast. Click on the Forget Location button to remove the marker from the map.

Note: the Forecast Location markers and the Search Marker cannot be deleted (forgotten). The Search Marker will be replaced next time you do a location search. You can choose to hide or show any of the marker layers from the panel below the map.
