The Cairns radar (located at Saddle Mountain) will provide Doppler images on the Bureau website from Monday July 20th 2015.

Associated with the Doppler upgrade will be higher resolution images, including an additional 64km range view product for Cairns and more frequent updates, going from 10 minutes scans to 6 minute scans.

This enhanced radar capability has been made to a significant part of the Bureau's national radar network in north Queensland, and will continue to allow local communities, emergency services, tourism, mining and agricultural stakeholders in the Cairns region to track local weather.

Doppler data from this radar will provide forecasters with improved "nowcasting" capabilities to more accurately monitor severe weather events including floods, thunderstorms and tropical cyclones.
